Not sure exactly what shake you're referring to but I just looked up Kellog's - Special K Protein Shake Strawberry, 1 Bottle and the calories/contents were relatively low. There are plenty of shakes out there that are high enough calories to be meal replacements. The Special K one though seems to be more just for nutritional gain and there wasn't enough protein in the one I looked up that it will add bulk or anything. Perhaps find out the exact product you bought and look it up on here and see what the stats say or just read the bottle. How high does the bottle say for calories?
  • I'm not an expert on protein shakes but I think you want to stay away from the the Kellog protein shakes. I think a lot of people go to GNC or a similar store and get those powdered ones which are probably much better. But as I said, I'm not an expert on this.

Protein shakes are fine to drink. The premade ones have more calories, I usually make my own that way I can change the flavor up etc.

I usually have one after most of my workouts to replenish my body.

I think the Special K ones are more of a meal replacement like Slim Fast.

Actually - unless you are a major body builder - if you just eat a well-balanced diet you actually recieve all of the protien that your body needs. I would skip on the meal replacement drink and just eat food. You will be much happier (and less hungry) afterwards.

Now here is a secret i learned at a personal training workshop i attended - after you work out, dont go for a protein shake - just drink a glass of chocolate milk. Im not joking. Chocolate milk has the optimum protein/carb mix to replace the glycogen to your muscle and help repair them post-workout. Just make sure you drink it within 30 minutes of working out.

Thats my wisdom of the day - take from it what you will :)

Protein shakes alone will not cause you to gain muscle or weight.

The primary use for these shakes is to help your muscles recover after workouts.

Yes, there are lots of calories in the shakes, but they are not calories from fat.

Also, many of the shakes include a lot of other vitamins and nutrients, so they can benefit you in other ways, too.

I always have a shake immediately after cooling down from exercising (even aerobics).

    Hope this help....
  • Wow :) thank you everyone for the response! :) i got some great information out if it :)

Protein shakes are for building muscle, not necessarily losing weight. That said, gaining muscle can help you to lose fat faster, and give you a healthy, "toned" body instead of the skinny weakling look. They're generally for use after strength training workouts, when your muscles need protein to help them recover. Don't worry, you won't get all bulky. Women lack the testosterone to build overly large muscles, so don't worry that you're going to end up looking like a pro wrestler or football player.
  • As a busy mom sometimes I run outta time and don't get to eat before I have to be somewhere (especially in the mornings). And I get a bit shakey if I don't eat something so i keep a couple of the Chocolate ones on hand for when I'm running out the door. (It tastes like Chocolate milk) They have: 190 cals. 5g fat 220mg sodium 550mg potassium 29 total carbs (5g diatary fiber & 18g sugar) and 10g protein. As well as lots of vitamins and minerals. So all in all not a bad thing unless you use them everyday!
