    Hi,

I would definitely file a complaint with the Medical Board against that Dr. I would also notify the insurance company. He sounds like a complete hack! I have knee problems myself (currently can't exercise because of fluid in my left knee). I have had knee problems since I was in high school when I was about 105 lbs through now when I am only about 10-15 lbs overweight. I am trying to lose weight because I know that will probably help my symptoms but it is not as simple as "you are overweight so that's your only problem." In terms of exercise ...can you bike on a stationary bike? How about swimming? I find these activities to be best on my knees.
  • That's terrible, and you should file a complaint with the state. Also, look at your insurance records and specifically how he codes and bills for this visit. It sounds like he did not do any type of decent exam, but I'm sure he is going to bill for a level of visit that MUST include a physical exam. You can notify and complain to the insurance and ding him for fraud. Hit him where it counts... $$$. Sorry you had this bad experience.. we aren't all like that. =)

Definitely agree - try to get the insurance people to take issue with him.
  • What a terrible man. I can't believe he brought your kids into the situation and wouldn't listen to you. That's so awful. You should definitely report him and see another doctor right away, to check on the condition of your knees. Try not to over exert yourself, sweetie.

But kudos. You spoke up and defended yourself. You should be proud of that. :)

I agree to file a complaint with the medical board. That behavior is unacceptable. He needs to look at exactly what you came there for.
  • So sorry you had to experience such a horrible thing!
You have to take away from it that not all professionals know best and so YOU do know the right thing! Eat your 3 meals, keep up with your snacks and get a recommendation for a REAL professional Doctor so you can get your knees looked at and some true useful.

You did the right thing by telling him off and leaving - he must be an arrogent SOB who stopped listening the day they taught metabolism in med school. I agree with those who say report him, but if that isn't somthing you want to do I would at least go to the rate a doctor websites and post your experience so that others can avoid this man. One is VitalSigns and another is Rate an MD, I think.... I always go to these sites to see what other people have experienced at an office before I visit a new doctor and I post after my visit no matter if the experience was good or bad. People should never let an idiot doctor walk all over them and I am proud of you for standing up for yourself!

Wow, that guy was a complete A-hole. Definitely file a complaint against him. Bedside manner is a part of their schooling-guess he failed that subject. I'm so sorry you and your kids had to live through that. If it makes you feel any better-I don't have prior knee problems and the 30 Day Shred hurt my knees too.

Just keep up what you're doing and screw that guy!

I say let's all go over there and let him have it! How dare him try to humiliate you like that!!!

Definitely file a complaint and look to see if there's a website to report idiot doctors!

You sure did handle it with grace!

That is F*cking ridiculous, you couldn't make this crap up. Are you sure you weren't going to Dr. Nick on the Simpsons? Are you really a cartoon character? I am shocked by what they told you, I can understand the losing weight thing will help, but to eat just one meal a day to do it is ridiculous. About 5 years ago I went to the hospital because I thought either I had a mild heart attack or was on the verge of a heart attack, I was 28 years old at the time. They ran an EKG, all was good, they drew blood, all was good (I thought I was a diabetic before the test), they ran several other tests (all were fine). I was rougly 125 lbs overweight at the time. The doctor comes in to discuss the results, he said that the numbness in my right thigh was due to my sciatic nerve. The other feelings I had numbness in hands, tingling were all stress related. He said that I had to find a better way to manage my stress. I asked how can I fix the sciatic nerve, he said, "Lose weight your fat", This coming from the Doctor who was just as fat or fatter than me. I said I was in the process of dieting and I suggest you should too. His only response was you are good to leave.

Report him, you are a strong woman and you gave him an earful but imagine if he goes off like he did on you on a person in a depressive/suicidal state of mind...it really doesnt bear thinking about

Firstly his attitude was way out of line

Secondly he gave inaccurate and quite honestly dangerous advice

Report him and find yourself a new Dr. Hope your knees get sorted soon

He might have thought you were after pain meds... what kind of doctor was this, a family/general or specialist?

Wow, that's nuts! To tell you to eat one meal a day is crazy. Even regular everyday people know that's not right. He should not be practising medicine!

I have had a simular experience with a doctor lately, and I too kept reminding her that I have been doing the same as you, weight was coming off slowly, then i fell and hurt my back, I am very over weight but never had a stitch of back problems in my 47 years. she was so rude and cold I walked out of the office in tears. More I thought about it I wanted to do something about it, I called and complained to her office, they had me see the doctor I normally see after that and there was a real medical issue with my back (imagine that) they didn't charge me any co-pays for any of the visits and that Dr had to call me an apologize, I blasted her when she called and yelled at her hard core and told her apology not excepted!!!! I am still looking for more people to complain to about this so called doctor, I seriously thought about taking out an add in the local papers LOL my husband wouldn't let me. Hang in there, not all doctors are like that and hope you find one that will treat you right.

Def. look for a new doctor. He should not be interrupting you, and I can't imagine anyone suggesting to eat one meal a day. Want to screw up your metabolism? Sure. Eat one meal.

You are making great choices, doing fantastic with your weight loss so far, and I'm sure your kids are fine! Please do your very best to take a few deep breaths, forget about the doctor, and try to have a good night.

Like I mentioned on your profile, you do not need to exercise to lose weight. It does help your body know that you should lose fat instead of muscle, and gives you more calories to eat. You can exercise very light, like sit-ups, or weight lifting, or taking a slow, enjoyable walk outside.

I agree! Do exercise that don't make you hurt. You are doing a great job and you did not diverse to be treated like that.

I would avoid things that make your knees hurt, and look for another doctor you can speak with.
  • YAY! Good for you for standing up for yourself and for telling him off, not that he listened. I would certainly file a complaint, and get a second opinion. And, like previous poster said, tell your insurance company immediately and tell them they should refuse to pay him as he did absolutely nothing, not a physical exam or anything. And I would put in writing to your insurance company, and the medical board exactly what happened.

I don't have knock knees or any other specific knee problem, but I was pidgeon-toed as a child, so I don't know if that had anything to do with it. About 6 months after I had my daughter (around the same she started sleeping in her crib, which was upstairs,) I began having knee pain in my right knee. Turns out I had a torn meniscus and I think walking up and down the stairs several time a day really aggravated it. I went to see an orthopedist, and he suggested I wait until I was finished breasteeding my daughter before having surgery. Then I got pregnant with my son, so then I went back to him and he suggested the same thing, that I wait until after my son turned a year before I had surgery. He put on my chart that I was morbidly obese, which, technically I am, but never said anything negative about my weight, except to (tactfully) say that I would clearly benefit from losing weight. He was very nice.

Try to do some research online to find a better doctor so you can get a second opinion.

What a colossal *kitten*!! Again, major kudos to you for defending yourself and your kids.

deffo report this guy, you were stong enough to stand up to him (well done btw) but a lot of people wont be and take what he says verbatim, which could end up really badly. I broke my foot and it swelled up to about double its size and the dumb doctor told me that i would be fine, didnt have to rest it and could start running again immediately. The next one i went to went ballistic cos i had been walking about on a broken foot for a week and a half and it took double the time to recover,

My mum has problems with her joints and cannot do any squats/lunges etc, some people have weak knees, go see another doctor and in the mean time can you maybe try to do something different? (although i do the shred too and knees are a pretty big part of it so im not sure how you'd manage this with the shred).

Oh. My. Gosh. I'm so sorry. That's horrible. Filing a complaint is a really good idea...and checking to see if his license is legit!

Keep your headup thats guy sounds like a joke! You are right to eat more than one meal a day. One meal a day omg what a nut!
  • Wow. That is insane. I would have done more than walk out and yell, yes even with my 2 young boys with me lol. You are strong. Definitely do what everyone else is telling you to do. File a complaint. But also. Was this in a "clinic" . You know, several doctors and such seeing tons of patients a day? If so (i use to work in one) complain to the Clinic Manager. The man/woman who runs the show. Show them your blog, write a very long descriptive letter of how emotionally hurt you were and how this "medical" Doctor showed NO bedside manner, and aggressively insisted on not helping you diagnose and treat your medical issue. If this was his own private practice, definitely contact the state medical board and keep going until you get results. He is clearly not good at his job and does not deserve to be seeing patients! It just makes me so mad because at the clinic I use to work at we had a doctor like that, and with just 2 or 3 similar complaints like yours he was quickly fired.... Your healthy lifestyle changes seem like they are the good things to be doing... So just keep them up!

You poor girl, what an inconsiderate excuse for a man. How rude, i had tears in my eyes reading your story hun!! You really need to report this man, he shouldnt be in that job if thats the way he talks to his patients!! Telling you to eat one meal a day, is a load of crap too, you would end up putting on weight that way, as your body would go into starvation mode!! Find another doctor, someone who will treat you properly, he deserved a good smack in the mouth!!

Regarding the knees, i am suffering with mine after doing the 30 day shred only managed 3/4 days, then had to give in!! Rest your knee for a few days and keep doing what your doing otherwise as you are doing so well!! If you have to get some weights and work your upper body, once you get your heart rate up it will all help!!

Keep smiling hun, and just forget this rotten doctor of yours!!

You rock! You rock for standing up for yourself, and not punching that dillweed in the jewels, like I would have.

Definitely definitely definitely file complaints to everyone you can. Who knows? He might really be off his meds, or on meds he's not supposed to be on. His bad judgment and worse bedside manner could be potentially harmful to someone without your cojones.

Wow what a day for you. I'm so sorry but I know just what your talking about I have had them make me feel like *kitten* too. I have a daughter and she is a big girl but plays college sports and her coach has made her hurt . The lack of sensativaty with people is unbelievable. Yes we ALL know that we are overweight but we all thick and thin have short commings should we beat them down with our mouth because they are ugly, bald, not as smart, crossed eyes, men with boobs, unable to satisfy their partner ect ect ok ok I'm getting carried away lol. All we can do is try be be as healthy as we can be and raise our children to have tolerence for ALL people that are different race ,sex, size, religion and who you choose to love.

Girl! My heart is pounding so fast i think it's going to jump out of my chest....You need to report this dud to the State Board of Physicians...your local city, take out an ad in the paper, call the BBB...do what ever you can. You nailed it he doesn't need to be seeing patients...not human ones anyway! So sorry for you...give that knee some rest and do what you can...you are off to a good start and don't let him rain on your parade!

Wow! What a poor excuse for a doctor! I commend you for standing up for yourself and your children and telling him what you think. I had a bad experience with a dermatologist a few years ago who was rude and patronizing and I didn't speak my mind but left feeling humiliated. I regret I did not report her and tell her how poor her doctor-patient relationship skills were. I agree with all of the above advice 1) report to the state medical board, 2) make a complaint at your clinic and make sure it is in his personnel file), 3) find a new doctor (a orthopedist or sport medicine doctor-ask friends for recommendations), and 4) demand a free doctor consult and get your copay/$ money back from the last one. Good luck and congratulate yourself on being assertive, strong and a good advocate for yourself. A person may be book smart and pass their residency, exams, etc. but lack the people skills needed to be a good medical provider.

I agree here 100% along with filing a complaint. Hit him where it hurts. What an @$$!!!

Eat one meal a day, to lose 2 lbs a month? Is he retarded?! Both of those statements alone are crazy, not to mention together!!

And berating someone who is trying to get healthier! Not like you are in denial and need some tough love! You are ready to do whatever you need to do (so it sounds) and need someone supportive, not someone trying to scare you straight (so to speak).

If you were in SoCal, I could recommend a good Dr. I went to an orthopod almost two years ago (I was thinner than I am now but still, not at an ideal weight). I was running at that time (well, jogging) and, when he examined me, I said, "It probably doesn't help that I am overweight". He told me that it was an athletic injury (had knee surgery in high school and, 20 years later, it was giving out.) He took X-rays and did a lot of bending and feeling around the whole knee.

Anyway, I hate Dr.s that think if you loose weight you would be perfectly healthy. When I was diagnosed with uterine cancer a the oncologist told me that he could get rid of the cancer but that I should get gastric bypass because my weight was causing it. I stuck with him a little longer until he wanted me to pay out of pocket for an expensive treatment because he wouldn't make any money off of it going through the insurance. Bye, bye.
  • I agree with everyone here. Def write a complaint letter to the medical board! Besides that, I would love to see his face when you go back to him in LESS than a year when you're 100 lbs less after having eaten 3 healthy meals a day plus your two snacks! And I would only go back to him because revenge would be sweet NOT for any medical advice! Good luck and keep doing what you're doing! One step at a time! He certainly isn't worth any tears!
