I got curious (because I do that) and just discovered for the first time in my life, I'm OBESE!

OMG. Effin' seriously?? I can wear a size 8 and I'm friggin' obese????? I mean, I know I've still got a ton of work to do to get my *kitten* in shape but.... really???

Yeah.. kinda looks like it. Tried a few different calculators and although the percentages did vary by a pretty good margin, the category stayed the the same.... obese obese obese. *sighs* All a matter of fatty tissue to muscle tissue... not about size.

Crap.

Anyway, I just needed to vent and hopefully get a word or two of encouragement. That's some pretty depressing news.

Yeah, I hate all those calculators - although I know I am obese - I have a minimum 100 to lose... From what I see in numbers, I would guess you must be in the low 5 foot height area, or I wouldn't believe them. Based on your weight I couldn't see you possibly being more than overweight category though.
  • those things mean NOTHING...they say that practically EVERYONE is obese...i mean its completely BS...dont go by that crap...cuz if it were true then i'd be obese the rest of my life! even if i looked perfect...

    You're awesome.

    You're also short.

You won't be obese because you're rockin' this!

    Thanks everyone..

I just .. I have to get a handle on this. A year is long enough to be stupid... I have to get over myself (AAAAAAHHHHHHgain) and just do this thing instead of .. screwing off, really. I make so many damned excuses for myself and look at where its getting me? Heart attack city. Yay me.

    SNARF!

Yep, when I really want to pi@@ myself off I go in search of ways to beat myself up..... And it is easy, as a short *kitten* body fat, bmi, I once found some US forces calculations .... Yeah obese, hey Fu@k em! I don't know about you but for me doing those calcs is a kind of self harm.... Might be an idea to cut out such activities. Xxx

clioand: it's kind of a wake up call for me. Even if I'm not "obese" in reality, it still speaks to the extremes of my body fat percentages. Which means I've not been committed to me and there's the evidence; regardless of what box you shove it in.

What calculators were these that say you're obese? Your BMI is closer to 'normal' than to 'obese'...so don't get too upset! :flowerforyou:

As for body fat percentage, I'm no expert but I don't think it's that simple to measure, and there must be a high margin of error! Short of actually taking your body apart and weighing the fat separately, there's no truly accurate way to know. You can measure yourself, pinch an inch, etc. but since fat is distributed differently on everyone, this is never going to give a 100% accurate result. Basically, I find it hard to believe that you could be truly obese!

Wake-up calls are good, but only as long as they don't make you despair!

Good luck with exercising, it'll allow you flexibility with your eating (I caved in to a whole bar of chocolate at work yesterday and considered jacking it all in for the day, but then I got home and worked it off on the bike in 20 mins while watching the news, so I stayed on the wagon! ) And remember those endorphins!
