Loose vs. Lose
Today, I felt it necessary to have a bit of English lesson mixed in with our always amazing fitness lessons from this site.
It seems that all too often we want to interchange these two words.
Lose and Loose are different words beside the O in the middle.
LOSE is defined as not winning, cannot find something, get rid of(as in weight)
LOOSE means not confined, unbound, having slack(as in clothes).
EXAMPLE
I want to LOSE weight so that my pants are LOOSE on my hips! LOL. I love this website and the incredibly talented and intelligent people on it. I hope we lose this habit of loosely using the words lose and loose.
(And as I finished this, I found my own mistake...lol...I originally typed "sight" for the word "site".)

I say let this be the start of our English word pet peeves, hehehe. Such as using hard when it should be difficult.
"Losing loose fat around my tricep is difficult and my dumbell is hard"0 -
like x a million!
its simple english people!0 -
*sight = site.

Amen! If there was a 'like' button I'd click it ^_^0

Yeah, I also am disgusted with people's lack of attention to proper word selection. "To vs. Too", "their, there, they're", "lose vs loose", "accept vs except", etc.. These are all different words"! Pay attention!0
-
Oooooh I will play! This is definitely the correct spelling of definitely. Not defenitly or definetly. That bugs me!!!! lol0

I know ! I had to kick myself and laugh.0

Thanks for posting this! Incorrect usage of words is a big pet peeve of mine (hopefully there are no errors in my post  ).0
-
I agree! I have to say, I noticed that on posts earlier. Glad you had the nerve to share!
Others I've noticed include: their, they're, there... Also, your & you're tend to be misused. I'll step down off of my soapbox now. I think I got my point across.
LOVE this site!0 -
While we are at it, to peruse something means to read it thoroughly, not to glance over.0
-
*sigh* your is constantly used in place of you're. It makes me want to wash my eyes.0

*sight = site.
ironic.
I can't call other people out without being able to call myself out. :blushing:0 -
Whenever you let loose your agitation about the misuse of these words you lose a few points for starting yet another thread about this.0

I guessed that it had. Maybe we should make this a daily post to have some "continuing education". I hope not to offend . My only goal is education.(In good fun.)0 -
For the most part, I find the grammar and spelling on this site to be quite a bit better than your average Craigslist ad.0

This subject has already been done to the point of exhaustion, perhaps instead of "continuing education" we should do a search before starting another thread about the same subject.0 -
I agree totally0

Quite right and I made sure to do so! What I found funny is that when I searched "Loose".......5 million other incorrect usages popped up first. I apologize to those who have seen this repeatedly . Newbies will continue to post this as they find themselves in the same situation. We should enjoy ourselves by commenting on topics we find "fun" vs .putting ourselves in bad moods by focusing on the things that exhaust us.0 -
Did I miss anything? I was washing my eyes.0

God Bless those with humor!!!!!0

I have plenty of humor just not a high tolerance for judging someone for something that is so petty if we wanted spelling lessons we would go back to school so all I am getting at is why judge for petty stuff or even bother to correct a battle that is not going to be why not focus on supporting each other in a positive way instead of a negative maybe make someone feel bad for spelling or using a word wrong everyone makes mistakes it happens to everyone being like this could run someone out of this site who really needs it like me0
-
I am lossed. What are we talking about?0

I agree. i don't understand why everyone is so hung up over other people's mispellings anyway. you know what they mean, why call them out on it?0 -
