I need to have a healthy relationship with food. It's a dangerous obsession for me. My whole life is a yo-yo between hardcore dieting and extreme binging where I eat until I hurt and undo all my progress. I hate myself for it. Maybe the diet thing isn't for me right now. I just want to be able to eat like a normal person but I can't. I need help.

I think if you have that kind of issue, you really have to speak to a doctor to advise some help. They should be able to help you find the underlying cause for your unhealthy relationship with food.
Good luck, be strong and speak to your doctor0 -
I'm struggling with the same thing. I don't know if monitoring my food intake every other day rather than every day might be better. I need to stay healthy but stop the constant obsession!0

I would make an appointment with a doctor or even a psychologist specializing in eating disorders. In order to break the cycle you need to figure out what makes you obsess and binge.0

We can't be the judges of how serious you feel this issue is. If it is controlling your life and leading to wild emotional swings not just guilt when you overeat than perhaps professional help would be best.
If you are just trying to stop yourself from fudging up like most of us here, for the past 3 days I've gone old school psychological correction on myself by using negative reinforcement, perhaps this crazy idea will work for you.
I have an elastic on my wrist (ironically a cute purple one from a broccoli bunch) and If I feel the need to go rampage through the kitchen in the evening, I snap it trying to snap myself out of it. Telling myself NO, you are NOT hungry (or if you are, go to bed you ate 1200ish calories today you are DONE). The idea is the thought to binge on cereal and bread (since that's the only thing I would binge on, at least I’m not into fast food and there are no treats in my hh other than granola bars) = pain so perhaps that will kick me out of the "I WANT it, now now now mentality when it's not something I need, I'm just TV bored.
Good luck!0 -
Thanks everyone for replying. I really want to get some professional help, (what I REALLY want is to check myself into an ED rehab clinic but as a full time student that's not really an option) but it's hard because I don't have the money to pay for something like that on my own and my parents aren't supportive. (They don't really see this as a serious problem, my mom's advice was to "just stop eating so much").0

The term diet is often misused. Diet is term used to describe the food an amimal eat day to day.
A panda has a diet that consists of bambo exclusively.
An owl has a diet of mice and rodents.
A bear has a diet of fish, mamals, berries and honey.
So, when peole say they want to start a diet what they really mean to say is that they want to change their diet. You don`t go on a diet, you already have a diet. In your case you diet varries drasticalley and is unballanced,
Since you identified your problem, you now have to set and objective to solve it. You want to create and maintain a healthy diet.
1st determine how many calories per day you need.this calculator will help: http://www.fitnessfrog.com/calculators/tdee-calculator.html, or use MFP.
2nd, learn about what food will get you to your caloric needs while balancing you levels of carbs, protein, fat, sugar, sodium, fiber ...
3rd. Keep the diet you developped for your entire life. You found a good diet to keep you healthy, stick with it and live healthy.0 -
I have found that eating clean and eating 5 small meals a day with each meal consisting of carbs, protein and fat has given me a love for food. I am able to eat every 3 hours and stay full till it's time to eat again. Have a look at my diary and see how much I eat. I only weigh 112 lbs.0

Hey!
I'm sorry that you're going through this with little support and no access to professional help. Kudos to you for trying to help yourself!
If you're a full time student, they may have health services options offered at a reasonable price or even free, including mental health services. If you're still on your parent's insurance policy, you could probably get counseling for eating disorder with low co-payments. It may not be the full-time ED services you want but it might not hurt to find out what you do have available to you.
The only things I can think of would be to try to think of food as nourishment, rather than a means to a weight goal. There are probably gads of eating disorder support groups online. That might help too!
Good luck to you!0 -
The book Women Food and God by Geneen Roth is a great read if you suffer from food addiction. The book was life changing for me.
