Want to eat more fresh veggies in a delicious fun way?

In case you haven't discovered hummus (or hummous) get educated. It is a wonderful middle eastern dip that is delicious. It is basically made from chick peas (garbonzo beans), tahini (sesame seed paste), olive oil, and lemon with different variations adding garlic, red pepper, artichoke, or spinach. The first time I tried it, I ate an entire bag of carrots dipping them into it. Now, I keep cut up broccoli florets, baby carrots, and grape tomatoes (or whatever, celery, cauliflower, asparagus) handy when I want a crunchy, tasty, satisfying, yet extremely healthy snack. As a reward for eating fresh, full nutritional value, veggies I intersperse 1 healthy (-ier) potato chip or tortilla chip in rotation as I eat through the veggies (1 carrot, 1 broccoli, 1 tomato, 1 chip -repeat). It is very filling, hi fiber, hi vitamin, and good on calories. The veggies are very filling but low calorie!

I love hummus! We have to buy the Costco tubs at my house. I don't know just HOW much better they are than potato or tortilla chips, but if you haven't tried 'em, pita chips are pretty stinkin' delicious for dipping, too!0

Large grocery stores have them around here or buiy chick peas and make it....0 -
Hummus is a great replacement for butter when you want a slice of whole wheat bread to go with dinner as your carb. I love hummus!! and it's VERY economical, which I adore!!

I use my george forman grill to make yummy pita chips.
I spray each side with OVOO and put on hot grill. You can also sprinkle garlic powder, rosemary, tyme,or onion powder.
I have a new processor so you can imagine my family is SICK of hummus...everyone but ME!!

I love it! The Sabra Roasted Red Pepper hummus is my favorite!! I buy the large tub at Sam's club. Great w/ veggies or on a tortilla w/ hummus as spread!! Yum!

So weird that you mention hummus. I came so close to buying some last night. I think I tried it once (years ago) and I don't remember liking it. Anyway, I picked up a few flavors to check out the nutritional facts and must've stood around for a good three or four minutes debating on whether or not dishing out four bucks on a container was worth it since I don't remember what it takes like. For some reason it reminds me of poi. Poi is some nasty stuff (IMHO). I decided not to get any.
Hmmm...maybe I will tonight. Okay. I will.

I live in Chicago so multi-ethnic foods are readily available. But I hear hummus is incredibly easy (and cheaper) to make at home. I'm sure you can "google" a recipe on line somewhere. : )

I does not taste like POI- I had poi both sweet and salty and never ever could get my head around people eating it. I like taro chips but no poi for me!

Also, no one I personally know ever eats hummus on veggies except me.
Everyone else eats it on pita chips, but I don't have those kind of calories to expend.
Besides, it's YUMMAY on carrots and green bell pepper slices!0 -
I have never been able to find a store-bought hummus that I like. However, my sister-in-law gave me a great recipe. This is the base which you can eat as is or you can add any other flavorings, spices, etc. The best part is you can adjust it to your own taste. For example, I've never made it with the Tahini because I couldn't find it at my local store and it tastes just fine without it. Even my 8 year-old who hates celery will eat celery if I put this hummus with it.
Ingredients:
2-14oz. cans garbanzo beans
Juice of 1 whole lemon (fresh is best but use about 2 Tbsp of Real Lemon if that's what you have)
2-3 cloves of garlic (must be fresh garlic, powder or salt does not taste right)
1 tsp salt
1T Olive oil (to desired consistency)
opt. 1 tsp Tahini (adds a "bite")
Directions:
Drain garbanzo beans. Add all ingredients together in a food processor. Add additional oil, salt or garlic as needed.0
