I'm not gonna say i hate it cuz for a while i was like hooked on it but lately i just have no mood for it so i haven't been working out at all, and i've noticed how weak my muscles are from it. what other stuff could i do to build up some muscle to help burn more calories and firm up? and would it be worth it, my brother in law has a weight machine like at the gym with the arms and leg machines and pull up machine, could i just do some of that each day and not do any cardio?

Well I personally like to hike, run, do squats, walking stuff like that.

I think it's important to do cardio cause if your only building muscle you are building it over any fat that you have.

I know what it's like to not be in the mood to run around, sweating  Lifting weights is fine - but you should still have SOME kind of aerobic exercise, even if it is a brisk walk around the park for an hour. I also hear it's good to vary your workout and keep your body guessing!

Strength training is crucial to creating a firm strong body. As is cardio important to burn the fat. They work together.

Have you tried changing what you're doing for cardio? People get stuck in this idea that cardio is running/elliptical only. Try a new video! anything that gets your heart rate up!

I do suggest strength training to anyone who is serious about losing weight and keeping it off. That, and I find it too be more fun then walking on the treadmill!!

i've tried it all, have several different videos, and elliptical treadmill and bike and can't make myself do more than 15 minutes even if i'm sitting there watching tv, it just makes me tired i don't feel like its giving me any strength, i did like ten butterflys the other day on the machine and it felt empowering, i can still feel the muscles that it hit. plus dont' you burn more calories the more muscle you have, so if i build up muscle then i will naturally burn more fat, right? maybe i feel like i've lost enough of my fat that i more want to tone up and thats why i'm no longer interested in the cardio

:ohwell: For cardio I do Aerobic Kickboxing Excercise 3 days a week and love it, it helps hitting that bag!:ohwell:

When you have lean muscle mass, it has been said that it requires more energy and burns more calories at rest.

Strength training doesn't actually burn fat in itself, it makes your resting metabolism work a little harder. You can be really strong, but still have layers of fat. Cardio is necessary, unfortunetly, to burn fat.

Do you listen to music and have a small snack before working out? Those may help prevent that "tired" feeling.

And most cardio won't build the muscle that strength training will. Maybe focusing on strength training for now will help you push harder in cardio.

  • Stick w/the cardio. I have found that I like to read or listen to my ipod or funny as it sounds, I catch up w/my long distance friends via texting when i ride the recumbant bike...I have found that an hour can pass by and I've burned 400+ calories doing that with out even thinking about it...I too, cannot watch TV b/c it bores me to sleep when i'm exercising...I like to just veg and sit when i watch tv..ha!

I say, stick w/the cardio, and even bump it up some so that you feel the burn...15 min really isn't enough to feel the burn...I have read that after 45 minutes, your body then burns calories from fat deposits, not just calories from that day...

That's not quite true... it really depends on how you are strength training.

If you put together strength training circuits for endurance training, you can burn fat, get the heart rate up, and get a good sweat all at once... it can take you to your cardio zone so you are doing two things at the same time.
The Debbie Siebers videos kinda work this way (Slim in 6, Slim Series)... you do many reps w.lighter weights and switch quickly from exercise to exercise.

Have you tried anything like that? You may enjoy that.

PS - for cardio workouts you don't have to stay on the same machine the whole time... try rotating... 10 minutes elliptical, 10 minutes bike, 10 minutes walking/jogging, etc etc etc.

Correct! I like to do that, and it really helps.

That's what I was kinda getting at, just a bit brain dead lately......

    Thanks for catching it:flowerforyou:

yeah i have the slim in 6, i loved it for a bit but was always so hard and never got easier. i think i'll try the weights, at least its better than nothing, then maybe once i feel stronger i'll get back to the cardio
