I am looking into mid-priced heart rate monitors for my birthday present this year. I don't want anything fancy, just something that will give me an accurate calorie count so I can really get this weight under control. I did a little research and came across the F6. It looks simple and no-bells and whistles, which I like about it. Anyone use it? What do you like/not like about it?

Thanks!

  • That's what I have!! I really like mine. I got it for a really great price too, on clearance for 69.99CDN. I have had no problems with it so far, easy to use!
I have not sat down to try and figure out how to upload the monitors info onto their website, but that's fine, cause i enter it all here anyways.

I don't think you can go wrong with any Polar. They seem to have the best reputation.

I just started using mine yesterday, and I absolutely love it. I like that you can see calories burned as your working out...seeing them go up is huge motivation. There is also features where you can log your time/cals burned in a diary but I haven't used that since I am using MFP. I am thrilled with my purchase, though.

Also, I got mine on Ebay for $70, which is about $40 cheaper than anywhere else I saw.

I've never used the F6, but my wife had the F4, and she didn't really care for it. I had an F11, which she inherited a few months ago when I upgraded to the FT60, and she likes it much better.

I think the main difference for her is that the F4 (and likely the F6) doesn't really keep much historical workout data. I think once you start the next session, you've lost the last one. The F11 does better.

For just knowing what your heart rate is, they all work about the same. Depending on the gym equipment you have access to, they are about the same. It will give totally different results. An elliptical machine calorie display will always exceed what the polar says (for me, by 20-30%), bikes will tend to underpredict.

Personally, for weight loss, spending the money on the FT60 is the way to go. It will set up a training plan for you (weight management being one of the three options), and track your progress to the plan. It was a bit daunting at first being "told" by my watch I needed to spend 5 hours a week at the gym (now, its up to 6) but its great motivation, and work to get my "trophy" every week (warning-don't overtrain at the higher heart rate levels) . I've been losing 2.5lbs a week since I got it 8 weeks ago, and my fitness test scores are way up. Relative to the F6, it probably costs only about one or two personal trainer sessions more. It forces more focus on the training bands (weight loss, cardio, extreme) which the F4 doesn't. If you have the discipline to track and maintain it on your own, that's great, but the better watches will make it clear, and the three training zones really do work!

I ordered a Polar FT4 the other day (currently awaiting its arrival!) I cannot wait for it to arrive. I have been slightly demotivated recently as I cannot accurate calculate my caloriese burnt. When it arrives i'm testing it on everything! A few mates on MFP have asked me to check it out and report so I'm going to do a full review for them all.

Only reason I got the FT4 rather than the FT7 is that I had quite a few people telling me there wasn't much difference (just the price) and the FT4 appeared to tick all my boxes. I just want to record the exact number of calories burnt so I know i'm eating enough. right now my weight isn't budging (partly due to said unmotivation as above).

I am also curious about how many calories I burn on my commute to and from work. I live in the countryside (bedfordshire / east anglia UK) and i work in London in the West End. My commute to work is approximately 1.5 hours. I'd say a good half hour of that is me speed walking!! I never factor this into my daily exercise so I am curious. Been advised that I can wear it like a watch so I'm going to do that for the first couple of days including a full workout in the evening and see if I need to adjust my daily calories, I don't think i've been eating enough as, although I have a deskjob, i'm not sat in one position all day, quite the opposite! i think i may need more than 1200 calories per day.

....also.... i replied to a thread earlier entitled "sex" .... have promised to try my HRM out next time! We were discussing how many calories you burn during.... (nudge, nudge, wink, wink!)

Thank you for all of the information! I have some time still to decide, so I'll do some research and make a decision. Thanks!
