I need relief, can you help??

I have been experiencing severe lower back/hip pain. The Ortho I saw really did not provide much insight for my problem, but he did send me on my way with a fair share of pills, patches, and ointments, without actually telling me what this pain may be. I thought it could be a pinched nerve or arthritis, but he ruled that out. I felt rushed through my exam and that he did not really understand my pain. It is a DEEP pain and it makes my hips, legs go numb at times and my lower back feels like it has been through some kind of trauma, it is actually hard to even describe what I am feeling. I was reading that cutting out dairy can be helpful. I need some relief outside of popping pills. Does anyone have any suggestions or can recommend a GOOD dr.(I live in Atlanta) that can really find out what I am suffering from? It is getting worse, not better...

Sounds like you might have a slight hernia. What were you doing when the pain started?

not a lot of info to go on. Off the top, get a second opinion. Assuming now recent physical trauma, i just got done reading an review on a protein powder that gave someone a kidney infection causing similar symptoms.

Sounds like a pinched nerve. I'd go see a chiropractor and let them adjust you. They always want you to come back over and over but I usually tell them to do a good job because I won't be back for awhile. I'd say over half the back pain that I've had was not curable with pills or patches.

I have always had pain in my lower back, I have seen a specialist in the past before, but this go round, it started after i did a walk on a trail in my neighborhood about 3weeks ago. It has gotten worse and the pain has now spread to my lower abdomen/side area.

See a good chiro[ractor and get a 2nd opinoin. I live by the rule, if I don't feel comfortable with the doctor i find a new one.

I'm a Massage Therapist in Ontario and I would look into over-tight hip flexors, especially the psoas major (also known as iliopsoas). If you google some self-stretching for these it could alleviate a LOT of the pain and referral numbness you've been experiencing. If you walked into my treatment room, that is where I'd want to focus the treatment (as well as the glutes, especially the Piriformis muscle, which can impact the sciatic nerve if it is too tight).
Good luck. Try to affect the soft tissue and muscles involved before seeking a medical condition to explain it. Most diagnosis will involve throwing pills at the pain instead of altering the cause, so I would hit up some yoga and massage before a doctor.
    Hope this helps!!!

I am definitely going for a second opinion, I know my body and I know this is not normal! The fact that it started in just my lower back and has now spread down my hip and leg and the numbness is kind of scary

I would definitely recommend a good chiropractor. I've had back problems all of my adult life, whenever it starts getting painful I see my chiro and he gets everything straightened out (no pun intended).

here's a link for the psoas muscle and the pain it radiates, as well as the Quadratus Lumborum muscle (a deep muscle that 'hikes' the hip up)

    Good luck!!!!!!

Hip/back pain is often sciatica or related to the sciatic nerve, but do go back to your doctor if you're in such discomfort rather than rely on us amateurs!

I experience the same kind of pain after I've been out walking on hard or uneven ground. I have often thought that I have a "bubble butt" might have something to do with the position of my spine which makes it suseptible (sp?) to trauma - especially since I am now larger and don't yet have the core strength to bring my spine into a neutral position.

What I've been doing to relieve some of the pain is foam rolling, I bought a foam roller at our local sporting goods store and I put my upper hips on it and kind of roll up and over it. I also use it all the way down both legs. When I find a spot that's particularly sore - I hold it there for awhile. I also use a tennis ball under my foot to stretch the tendons that go up the back of the leg.

The foam roller can give me a LOT of relief and it's not hard to use... though at times it's a little awkward.

Here are some stretches for sciatica relief to maybe ease some of your pain until you can get medical relief. I'd also recommend a chiropractor and a massage. It's been 11 years since I lived in Atlanta, so I can't remember the name of the chiropractor or massage therapist I used when I lived there. But the massage therapist was at a womens gym in Tucker, My Fair Lady, so you might call them and see if they are even still there and can get you in for a massage or recommend a chiropractor. I believe the owners name was Gayle or Gayla.

That happened to me once and it was the Sciatic nerve. My whole hip hurt and my let too. The pain was only on one side. Standing was the worse, sitting ... some pain, but I found that laying flat on my back was a blessed relief. I put a board under my mattress, took some muscle relaxants and took it really easy for a couple of weeks and soon felt much better.
