Wondering about maintaining good eating habits during dietin

I'm pretty new around here and have a question about my eating habits.
I have a history of massive over-eating. I've had chronic depression for years (no, make that decades). It's taken a good two years of trying different medications with my doctor to finally find the right combination that has taken me out of that deep-dark-place that you just can't understand unless you've dealt with this type of thing before. Still, my opinion of myself has not been very good. I kept up with the over-eating (filling up that void), thinking that I've got to find a way to *feel better about me* in order to find the motivation to *begin losing weight.*
When that didn't come, I thought that maybe I've got it backwards. Maybe I have to *lose the weight* in order to begin *feeling better about me.* That was an AHAA! moment for sure
The dieting is going remarkably well and I have found that I indeed do not shrivel up and die on the spot if I feel hungry. Still, I've taken the advice to snack in between meals (a piece of fresh fruit, veggie of some, dried fruit, yogurt, etc.). The concern I am having is that this way of eating is so similar to my over-eating. I feel a hunger pang, I reach for food.
Now, my brain is telling me not to be ridiculous. This is nothing like over-eating. I'm not polishing off half a box of Cheezits or an entire pound cake in one sitting. I think I just need to hear it from others.
So, am I being ridiculous? Is healthy eating just that: healthy eating? Without any "except if's" added to it?

Healthy eating is eating good food in good amounts. Portion control is key as we can over indulge in anything. Although if you are going to "binge" then I would say binging on good food is better than binging on processed unheathy food. Remember moderation in all things is the key. Good luck!0

Hi there.
With regards to your eating, you should eat little and often, every 2 tp 3 hours, eating smaller means and healthy snacks. Never go so long that you are starving by your next meal or you will consume too much, and might even think you are still hungry and go for some unhealthy alternatives, which sorts your hunger in the very sort term, but ill just be empty calories and will mean you will want a snack in another hour, and go for the sugary treat.
Also, hunger and dehydration can sometimes be mistaken, so if you are feeling the pang, reach for some water, this may subside it for a bit, if you are still hungry then tuck into some healthy snack options, eggs, peanuts (small amounts), almonds etc. They contain some good fats as well as protein that will fill you up.
Good luck, and welcome, this site has been a life saver to me and many!!!0 -
