I did a similar post about avocados last week....

Humous has a lot of calories, I am annoyed to note, but I love it! And it's high protein, so should I be eating it or not?

Depends how much you eat! I can certainly get a satisfying snack of humous with carrot or celery sticks for around 100 cals. I do look for the reduced fat varieites, mind.

As with any food - good in moderation. I think the benefits far outweigh the calories, but of course that doesn't mean I can eat a whole container. Don't get me wrong, I COULD eat a whole container if I let myself

Even though I'm in the middle of Indiana, there is a great little Middle Eastern restaurant that makes the best humous. With their own pitas. I love eating at restaurants that serve real food.

Yes - it is good for you and much better for you than some other processed equivalent that you could eat and take on the same amount of calories. A weight watcher leader once told me that full fat hummus is 'as bad as cheese' when it comes to calories and fat, so I always have the low fat one if I can get it. If not, I have a smaller portion as its a good way to get good fats and protein.

Same goes for avocado - good fats. And the good fats help you lose belly fat (if you've ever read the flat belly diet book!)

    Enjoy...

I don't like the low fat version, it just isn't the same. I do really love it, but I find it slightly depressing I can easily eat a third of my daily calories snacking on humous and cucumber. I don't have a lot to lose, so I am having to really calorie watch now.

I found a hummus recipe for one you make and can flavor. It's made without olive oil, it uses tahini.

    1-2 cloves garlic
1 can (or 1 1/2 cups) cooked chickpeas, drained
    1/8 cup lemon juice
cooking liquid from beans (or water)
    1 tbsp. tahini (sesame paste)
    1/4 tsp. cumin
    1/4 tsp. paprika
    dash cayenne
    a few sprigs fresh parsley
    sumac (optional)

    food process away!

I love hummus but I do make my own. You can Google it and find several.different recipes in which you can control the ingredients and therefore the calories...
  • Also Love Hummus ...unfortunately with the pita bread which I stay away from these days...But the cucumbers sounds like a good idea with Hummus... Also to Jenn who gave that recipe... Do you happen to know the calorie and fat content???? Thanks!

If you don't eat meat, it's all the more important to get your good fats and nutrients, so I'd be wary of completely cutting out things like avocados and pulses, just cos their calories and fats seem high.

Hummus snacking can be problematic with it's high calorie count but have it as your primary protien for dinner with some grilled veggies and a litle rice or other grain like Quinoa or Barley or Millet and you've got a great healthful meal. Just, as others have said, be moderate with the Hummus as it is fairly calorie dense

I think it's also pretty high in fiber, too, so if you drink a bunch of water with it, plus add veggies for dipping, you ought to be fine - also look into making it yourself, it's super-easy and you can use as much or as little fat as you like. i'm trying a recipe tonight with two tbsp of tahini, so we'll see how that works...
