Any time you eat meat that has a bone in it, do you throw the bone away? When you cook with veggies like onions, carrots or celery do you toss the inedible ends in the trash?

STOP!

Get some air tight containers or ziplocks and save these things in the freezer! When you have a good amount piling up get out your large stock pot and dump all the frozen goods in. Cover with water, add ground black pepper and salt (not a ton!) and let it simmer for an hour. Remove all bones/veggies and pour into containers/ziplocks for freezing. You now have a base stock for SO many meals that is healthy and tastes phenominal.

Soak some dry beans in water over night and make a bean and veggie soup. Use some the next time you make rice. Freeze tiny containers for quick cup-of-soup days (add red pepper flakes, and a couple of sticks of spaghetti broken up into tiny pieces!). The possibilities are endless and it drives me NUTS that there are still people that just throw out their Thanksgiving turkey carcass or don't know the wonders of Ham and Great Northern Bean soup from Christmas leftovers! :-D

sounds good - I'm hoping to make a big veggie soup this weekend - be a great time to do the stock too!

I do this with EVERYTHING! Drives me nuts too :) Even if I am in a rush and pick up one of those rotissere chickens from the deli at the store, after we eat the chicken I put the bones and skin in the crockpot and let it go all night long. By morning I have dark, rich, beautiful stock for the freezer. So much better than canned or boullion and no salt (or very little) or msg!

Hey cool! I always wonder what to do with the ends of veggies. I thought about throwing them in a food processor and making dog treats for my dogs but I make a lot of soup so having broth on hand would be great! Thanks!

awesome idea... for the most part it's lack of knowledge...don't have a lot of variety in my repetoire (spelling?)...i am looking to go back to cooking because i am tired of processed food and that is definately the healthier way to go..so i'm trolling the posts for recipes and ideas. thanks

I've heard that some people use the spent bones/veggies from the stock to do this but I'd think the bones would be hell on a food processor.. :-)
