Anybody out there swim as their primary form of cardio? I just read an article about how swimmers don't typically lose as much weight as those who do other forms of cardio, because swimmers tend to eat more after working out. This had something to do with the hunger swimmers typically feel after a workout because of the large amount of calories burned and the cool temperature of the water. Does anyone have difficulty keeping from overeating after a swim, and what do you do to satisfy your hunger without overeating?

I swim twice - possibly three times - a week. I wouldn't say I feel any more hungry after my swim than I do after my gym workouts but I generally finish my workouts about 11:30 in time to get my son from nursery so by the time we get home its lunchtime anyway!

I'm off for a swim today. I plan to have a protein bar and a piece of fruit straight after. Like anything, you only over-eat if you choose to, so if you are committed to your program, it shouldn't be an issue.

not my main form or cardio but once a week a good hard swim. I just log my calories burned and watch what I eat. I was swimming in the evening so Id have a snack then bed.

I swim 3-4 days a week, typically 2000-4000 yards. I started again in Sept 2010, and didn't see any weight loss initially because of this. I get very hungry after a swim. But it can be controlled. Once I got on MFP in November and started planning my days and was accountable for overeating, I stopped eating everything in sight after a swim. I swim at night, and try to leave myself about 200 calories for a snack afterwards. Sometimes it's healthy, but sometimes I have a treat. I just make sure to plan for it and make sure it's within my daily calories.

That said, I'm trying to lose slowly, so YMMV.

I am hungrier after my swim than after the same amount of time doing cardio at the gym, so I choose to swim a little longer and burn more calories, so I don't eat over my allowance. I feel just as hungry after a 60minute swim as I do after a 90 minute swim, if that makes any sense!
