Does Diet Soda keep you from losing weight?

I am an avid diet pepsi drinker and have heard conflicting reports on the affect of weightloss. I know there are reasons that one shouldn't drink it, but was wondering the affect here.

I can't say for 100% sure, but i DO know that when I stopped drinking my one 20 oz diet coke per day, that my weight loss kicked back into gear. Take that for what it's worth0

I'm a diet soda drinker as well. I have a hard time loosing weight, but I don't think it has anything to do with the diet soda. I wouldn't give it up, even if it did, though. I would just workout a little more. Diet soda to me is like booze to an alcoholic! LOL!0

Caffiene dehydrates you so that can be a factor as well. I gave it up about 4 months ago.0

I heard that the aspartame can cause weight gain...I love diet coke so I am in the same boat...I have been trying to drink more water though...maybe just for health sake, try to cut down on your soda? Maybe just 1 a day or every other day? Nestle pure life flavored water is pretty good if you dilute it in half....maybe try to replace some soda with this water and cut out a little of the flavor each week or something?0

I have at least one 330ml can a day for days on end sometimes. I sort of go through phases.
I'm in the best shape I've been in, in years and years and if it IS slowling things down - I can cope with it.
I'm not going to give it up for life so will settle for the loss as it is.0 -
My main issue is that i know if i deprive myself of something im not going to stick with it. so since my diet drinks have 0h of carbs, calories, and sugar i still have them a few times a week. im not talking every meal though. maybe one every two days or so. but ALWAYS either diet and/or sugar free,0

It's probably not healthy, but also probably better than regular soda. So, do what you can to drink water instead, but if you are still making your weight loss goals while drinking one or two a day, then don't worry too much about it.
If you Google artificial sweeteners you'll find a lot of contradicting articles about safety. I don't think there is a lot of good science on the subject, but many of us would rather be safe than sorry.0 -
well i know on the news that the fake sugar that they use is linked to heart attacks, that scared the crap outta me when i heard it like a month ago....but todays world, everything is pretty much linked to heart attacks.....i would say try to stop drinkin for a week and see how u feel n if the scale says anything different n then the next week drink the diet soda and see what happens, like ur own lil experiment0

It can, but I wouldn't say it's definite. Depends on how much you ingest, adequate water intake, and a lot of other things.

There are so many reports on both sides. Personally, I place the most "weight" in how the stuff makes me feel over time (and how my smart pharmacist friend scientifically explains it). I feel better and have no cravings or low blood sugar days when I stay away from diet sodas and artificial sweetener in coffee or tea, or anything else. The body reacts to the sweetness, and signals the brain to release insulin, whether the sugar is real or not....which then leads to lower blood sugar and cravings, because the sugar wasn't real. I stay away from it because it makes me crave stuff...and because the chemicals keep your liver busy getting rid of them, rather than doing it's real job of processing nutrients and fats. "If it can not process the nutrients and fats that your body needs, this will cause you to gain weight, or will prevent you from losing weight." The body does very well in processing NATURAL sugars, like in real fruit--so that is a much better choice.
Plain coffee, by the way, contains oils that your body cannot digest, and is also responsible for triggering insulin release in the body...and other hormonal effects. I cut way down on the coffee, cut out the sweeteners in the one cup I may or may not have, and feel better...and started burning the fat, now. Not to say this is the same for everybody...it probably depends on tolerances, and how your body adapts over time...0 -
Diet sodas have been shown to affect your body's natural appetite suppressants. So while having a diet soda allows you to be drinking fewer calories, your body's natural reaction to say, "I'm full" when eating is restricted (ie. the gal who orders the diet soda, but super-sizes the fries.)0

I have been drinking Diet Colas every day for as long as I can remember!! Started with one a day, and then up to 5 or so. I can tell you in the past few days I've stopped all together, and I AM NO WHERE NEAR AS BLOATED. I did have a friend that stopped drinking soda and he lost 32 just for that over a year's time! Stay away from the soda, or just have a minimal amount as a treat. I think you will feel better!0

Water hurts my stomach, so I have fell in love with Diet Dr. Pepper. I know it is bad, but I do not think it impedes my weight loss other than possible water retention.0

I have been off Diet Pepsi for about 6 weeks now and my weight hasn't gone up NOR gone down.0 -
I was a avid soda drinker and gave it up for lent. I have cheated a couple times but overall, i dropped an extra 10 lbs by cutting out diet soda. The artifical sweeteners do make you crave sweets so that may be another reason for it!0

It has made no diffrence in my weight loss.I have heard that it makes some people crave sweets more and that could be why.0

I love my diet soda and it doesnt affect me at all....even one time a couple years ago i stop drinking it for three months when i was on WW and it still didnt affect me in anyway!!!!!!!0

sure you can drink diet soda... but if you have that, you shouldnt mix it with regular sugar (say you want something that has sugar in it) other than fruits.
there will be a chemical reaction to it. (which leads to not lose weight either you stay the same or you will gain).
so if you mix sugar with fake sugar, you will not lose the weight. even if it just a little. (but you can still lose weight by just watching what you eat and exercise) but if you wondering if that is preventing, you will have a little more hard time to lose the weight.
but its not impossible to lose it with the diet soda.0 -

Yup, I gave up Diet Coke nearly 6 months ago and only started losing weight when I started counting calories and watching my carbs about 1 month ago. Diet drinks played no factor in my weight loss.0 -

Very true, researching aspartame is what made me kick my diet soda habit. I was hoping the facts I was reading about it being a "sweet poison" (literally) weren't true so I looked it up on Snopes. http://www.snopes.com/medical/toxins/aspartame.asp SCARY STUFF. And now if I even put one packet of Equal in my coffee, I get a migraine. And I'm talking tunnel vision barfing my brains out worst pain of my life for 8 hours I'd rather die kind of migraines. I stay far far away.0
