How do I get out of Starvation Mode?

I have been on my weight loss journey for almost 3 years now and I lost 76 pounds. I did it by eating around 1200 calories (or less) everyday and working out 5-6 times a week. I hit my goal of 140 in October 2009 and almost instantly started gaining while still eating the same calories and doing the same workouts. I have now gained back 18 lbs and I am so frustrated that I don't even know what to do anymore. I eat less, I eat more, I work out less, I work out more! Nothing is working, I even bought the book "17 day diet" and tried it and I gained 4 lbs doing that! I have been reading posts on MFP and have realized that I have put myself into starvation mode. I have been eating around 1500-1600 calories for the last week and I am staying exactly the same! What do I do to start losing again?

have you had your thyroid checked lately?
have you stuck with your changing ways long enough for it to have time to work? Say 2 or 3 weeks before switching to another way.
I would not kill yourself at the gym--30 to 45 mins a day and 1200 calories of high quality foods, lean meat, fresh veggies, fruit, very little whole grains and dairy.0 -
How is your sodium intake?? Are you drinking enough water??0

It generally takes about a month... at least that is what it took for me. But then i quit smoking and gained some weight back.... -sigh-0

get tom venutos book "burn the fat feed the muscle", you are learning the hard way that what is commonly advertised as the "right way" to shed weight is dead wrong, also check out my blog post about feeding to succeed, if you want a better way then you are ready to learn what really works and what really lasts and its not starving yourself.0

I would so get your Thyroid checked... I was working out and eating right but kept gaining weight. As it turned out my thyroid was off....0

I drink tons of water, I eat clean, lots of veggies and water and only whole grains, and I havent had salt for 3 years! Sigh....
I have had my thyroid tested too and it is in the normal range! Whatever that means!
Everytime I change something up I stick to it for at least 2 weeks to a month. I have been in this dilema for over a year now!0 -
I would print out your food and exercise journal and visit your doctor STAT! It very well could be a thyroid issue.0

I meant lots of veggies, lean protien and only whole grain. oops0

Find out what your BMR is for your age, weight, height, and sex and eat NO less than that plus eat back any exercise calories you accumulate each day. For instance, if your BMR is 1700 cals (just what you need to survive on if you just sat all day and night) minus 500 cals, so that puts you at 1200 cal. per day If you burn 300 cals while exercising then you can eat 1500 cals that day. Try for no less than 1450 and no more than 1550. Also, change up your work out. The body gets use to the same old thing. Up your intensity or time, i.e. walk then run, then walk then run instead of just all fast walking. Incorporate strength training for sure. Floor exercises or if you can use actual weights thats even better. Drink AT LEAST half your body weight in ounces each day and watch sodium and sugar. Also, maybe up your protein a bit. I know it seems like a lot but just try it faithfully for 7 full days and I'll bet you'll see a drop. Blessings to you.0

About 2 months ago I moved. Prior to the move I was eating 1100-1200 cals a day and burning almost all of it (My net cals would be 177-300 per day). I was losing a lb or 2 one week and then nothing for a couple weeks then 5 lbs etc. Well, during the move (as most moved have a tendency of doing) I was eating a lot of convenience foods and other than the packing, moving, cleaning, and unpacking wasn't getting any workouts in... But I let my body off the hook because I realized that I couldn't control the way things were going at the time. I mean, I still tried to watch portion sizes and chose this rather than that at the drive thru, but when it boiled down to it, I was just me. I wasn't trying... and do you know, that's what it took to finally break the 200 mark? that 2 week period I lost 12 lbs!
Try letting your body off the hook. I think sometimes the stress of trying to count everything and make sure we get to the gym get our bodies wound so tight they can't function properly. Give it a good week where you don't worry about it. Try to be active (go bowling or hiking, take walks after supper) but don't go out of your way to work out... perhaps your body needs a vacation .0 -
and I havent had salt for 3 years!
Salt? Or sodium?
I know a lot of people that think because they don't put salt on their food, they aren't taking in sodium. However, sodium is, in my opinion, one of the most difficult things to keep under the recommended intake, especially if you eat any processed food or anything that comes in a can. Even soups, V-8, cake, etc. Sodium!
But if it's not something related to sodium, sugar or water, I'd talk to a doctor.0 -

Did you talk to your dr about your dilema? Did he offer you any advice? What about talking to a nutritionist?
I think checking your BMR and perhaps taking up a different FUN physical activity are both great ideas.0 -
I watch my sodium intake, I never eat anything over 20% sodium, and I eat very little packaged foods. After all the thyroid advice, I called my doctor and have an appointment for Monday.0

I have thyroid problems and sometimes it does slow down the weight loss, but there are a lot of other things that might do it. So, that's not bad advice.
You said you worked out. Do you do exercises to build muscle? The muscle will help you to keep the weight off. (It sounds like you might be doing this). But all too frequently, a person in the situation you find yourself, has lost by 'crash' dieting and lost muscle. If that could be the case, you're likely to just have to work really hard trying to get it back.
Also, sometimes when people get in this situation, eating more can sometimes actually help. But eating the right things--lots of protein and even a little fat. Try to get all the food groups in the proportion recommended. Don't limit any one thing because dieters generally consider it 'bad'.
I read the advice on finding your BMR. That's good advice too. You can eat more, just try to make sure it's good food for the most part.
Finally, the first thing I think of when I hear of someone gaining weight back after a big loss is my tendency after I 'finish' loosing to forget about the diet and celebrate by eating everything in sight that I denied myself while I was losing. It sounds like if you did do that, you've stopped.
Believe me, I empathize! I hope some of the advice in this section helps you!0 -

How did I post this twice?? Sorry, but I don't know how to get one of them off!0 -
I change up my exercise on a regular basis, I do yoga, run on the treadmill, crossfit, weight training, aerobics, Jillian Micheals videos, I have tried it all!0
-
I'm so sorry! Maybe your dr will have some good feedback for you. If he doesn't have anything useful to offer, ask to be referred to a nutritionist.0
-
how many cals are you eating based off mfp recommendations for a one pound a week loss and do you eat back your exercise cals?0
-
I have been eating back my exercise calories for 2 weeks now, I have read several of your posts (Newfiedan) and been following your tips and pointers. I changed my goal for weight loss to 1 lb per week and I am supposed to be eating 1280 calories. Today I burned 470 calories on my treadmill for 45 minutes, and my calorie intake for today is over 1600 which I think is crazy! I am about 150 calories under right now!0

Perhaps forget the scale as the sole measure of your progress? Especially if you're maintaining and working out, perhaps focus on body composition, not weight.0 -
iodro pretty much mirrored my thoughts there, did you take any measurements as a reference point? I would also like to know what your workout breakdown is how much cardio/type of cardio and how much weight training. Diet wise I would have to have access to your diary to recommend changes.0
