tonight i found this great resource for business travelers on staying healthy: http://www.thehealthyroadwarrior.com. while it's focused on tips for biz people, being a healthy road warrior can apply to anyone who is often on the go -- whether for work or vacation. there is definitely a minefield of challenges while on the road... with all the tantalizing buffet meals, savory and sweet snacks, sugar- and cream-laden coffee and tea, hotel lounges with complimentary hors d'oeuvres and happy hours, you fill in the blank.

even so, let's believe that it IS possible to stay healthy even when we're away from home. for myself, i'm determined that for every business trip i go on, i'm going to return healthier than before. i refuse to let corporate america affect my waistline and arteries! :) especially since my next job rotation will require me to travel to southeast asia for several weeks at a time, i'll need to plan ahead. i got some practice doing this during my recent trip to beijing, and i managed to even lose weight (i still find that unbelievable ;P)

some things that worked for me were:
-finding out about the hotel's gym and fitness activities
-packing workout gear, incl. my HRM, interval timer, resistance bands, and DVDs
-scheduling an early wake-up call so i could fit in some cardio/strength training, then going swimming at night to relax
-portioning out snacks in advance, so i could munch on those instead of those served during coffee breaks
-sticking with unsweetened tea and having no alcohol
-custom ordering healthy foods for breakfast

tomorrow i'm leaving for dubai for another biz trip, and i'm ready and prepared. :) i'm especially excited about taking tennis lessons and playing with my colleague, and practicing my freestyle stroke!

what are your top tips for staying healthy while on the go for business or vacation? or what are some things that you'd like to start doing more of when you're away from home? wanna be a healthy road warrior?? let's do it together! :)

That's great advice! Enjoy your trip!

It is amazing to visit different parts of the world but I can understand the difficulties in keeping on track with eating habits.

Im so with you on this.... I travel a lot and it disrupts your meals And your work out. I wind up living on ceaser salad (dressing on the side)... Even vegitables can come covered in butter. Prawns come swimming in full fat mayo, grilled fish comes in a thick sauce. Im getting more bulshy with the waiters which helps :)

Thank you soooo much for this. I'm a coach and constantly traveling overnight on the weekends and it's a struggle to stay true to my goals.

This weekend I'm ready to rock it!

I don't do much international travel, which I imagine is even trickier if you don't know the cuisine well. But I travel frequently to conventions for my job, and usually stick to a salad (I don't worry about the fat in dressings, but try to stay away from sweet ones) and some sort of protein. Salmon on top of a caesar is usually my first choice, or steak and a garden salad with balsamic.

I eat fairly low carb, so I typically ditch the bread if we're having sandwiches catered for lunch (sometimes I grab 2 "innards" if there's plenty to go around). Wine is usually my only downfall.

Awesome, thanks for the tips and link! I'm going to be traveling quite a bit over the next month and my main goal is not to lose any of the progress I've made so far.
