Psyllium Husks

After seeing a bag of psyllium husks at the grocery store i thought i'd find out what they are useful for.
Turns out not only are they a super fiber making you 'more regular' but they are useful in weight loss and for general detoxing. They are good for weightloss as they apparently fill you up quite a lot as it expands in your stomach. It also gets rid of old waste in your system that might be weighing you down.

It is the weightloss side of things i'm interested in.

So i'm wondering has anyone had any good success with these?
Any good recipes?

I started taking 1 tbs a day in yoghurt. It tasted discusting though as the psyllium goes gelatinous once it gets wet.

I did come up with one good recipe that is about 100cal per serve:

Ginger Psyllium Slice:

1 1/2 cups oat flour (ground oatmeal)
1 1/2 cups psyllium husks
1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup honey
1/2 cup Low GI sugar
4 dates chopped
1/4 cup pistachios crushed
1/4 cup hazelnuts crushed
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon crushed fresh ginger

Combine ingredients. Put in a slice pan. Cook at 160 degrees C for 30 mins. Slice into 16 pieces. Each piece will have the equivilant of 1 1/2 tbs of psyllium.

It is very important to have a glass of water at the same time as eating this slice and to drink at least 6 glasses of water a day whilst having psyllium to prevent blockages dehydration or even choking which is apparently possible as the psyllium expands so much.

    Hi

I can't say I had any long term success. I heard on the Dr Oz to take one tsp after every meal to increase fiber intake and guide in weight loss (three times a day). I just add it to a cold glass of water and drink it quick. If the end of the glass is gelly then i just add more water. I aim to get my fiber intake up to 35 grams. One of the functions fiber does is to absorb fat. Anyway good luck.

Yes, I use them...I definitely think they help. This may get a bit TMI so apologies before hand

I'm not a sufferer of constipation in the usual sense of the word but I only used to go to the toilet once or twice a week (when I did it was perfectly normal and not copious amounts or anything) and I felt it definitely impeded my weight loss, it can't be good for you to have it sitting around inside you. I started taking a tablespoon of psyllium daily and visiting the bathroom more often (not daily mind) not only do I not feel quite as sluggish but a lot of my mega water retention disappeared. A nurse suggested the reason being that I was flushing the toxins thru quicker, not sure on the science there but when I don't take it my water retention is back up to disabling levels (3 inches around my ankles makes it hard to walk!)

I don't have any recipes, I add it to juice and drink it quickly or I end up with a face full of gel! It also mixes tastelessly into yoghurts and other thicker semi liquids (takes much longer to thicken in those) but I have heard of it being added into coeliac bread to provide the stickiness that gluten usually provides

Once again sorry if TMI...now i'm gonna sit here wondering if it was wise to share my toilet habits with MFP!
