edited September 26 in Health and Weight Loss
So recently I have been asked by people "what are you doing to lose wieght" or "how did you lose the weight" I am 42 lbs down since 12/26, still have a long road to go, but I am happy that people are noticing.
Heres the thing, I don't think they believe me when i tell them simply calories in vs calories out. I log my foods, stay with im my caloires 98% of the time and workout 5 to 6 times a week. Only last week did I start using a personal trainer. It seems many people want to think that I use some sort of magic pill, or special diet, or I'm not sure, but really I don't its the simple calories in vs calories out and working out. As of right now I do not eat my workout calories back, because its working, when it stops working, i'll adjust it.
Just wondering if anyone else has run into the same??
I always tell them about this site and offer to friend them if they join, but so far no takers......

I do eat healthier now than before, but do not deprive myself of anything, if I want it, I figure out a way for it to work into my calories.
  • Oh believe me I know! I'm an RN and even my co workers (who should know better) are constantly looking for the easy road. There is no easy road. I see lots of patients after bariatric surgery too and I hate to be the one to tell them that it still all comes down to diet and exercise, even after bypass surgery.
I've come to the realization that I'm probably going to be logging what I eat the rest of my life, and I'm ok with that!

Same here! When I tell them I'm watching what I eat and hitting the gym, it seems like a big letdown!

You could open your diary up and ask for some advice on the forums. It may help. :)

I was asked yesterday "what are you taking" !!! My answer "I am doing it the old fashioned way - eating right and excercising more"
The guys at work find it hard to believe - I must be the person that eats most during the day - I feel as if I am always in the kitchen.... But they are now seeing the results - and a few has started to follow my lead.

I am just starting to get a double take - when people look and then look again - I have lost almost 40lbs in less than 3 months. Dont get me wrong, I have plenty more to lose.

I have read just about every "diet" book out there, and have tried everything, including fake weightloss patches, thermobol , fruit only detox and even zenical......but none and I mean none of them have got near to this app.

Its that simple. Eat slightly less than the energy you expend and you will always lose. chuck in plenty of walking and double whammy - off it falls!

I have currently dropped bread, rice, pasta and potatoes from my diet (i mean food as I am not on a diet) and the inches are now following the pounds.

Well done, Good luck and keep up the good work!!

  • The great thing is that you are still here and probably have not gained any weight either which is such a great thing! Keep in there. My weight loss has really plateaued however my awareness of what I am eating is great. I also do not do much exercise so need to change that.
  • I don't eat my exercise calories back in general. I do sometimes eat a few of them (via an extra glass of milk or a piece of fruit) if I have a particularly tough work out or I have more than 400 exercise calories that day.

I don't know why people find it so hard to believe. My boyfriend's mother sees me eating all day long and wonders why I'm losing weight and she's not. She eats half as much as I do and is more active, generally. I've tried explaining to her that it's not how much you eat, but how you choose your food. Sure I have some days where I go over my calorie allowance, but I try to make up for it the next day and it keeps me on my diet. If I never allowed myself to have the extra yummy things, I would have given up a long time ago.

I think she's thinking if she continues to eat the bad stuff, but less of it, she'll lose weight...but then she just ends up hungry and overeats. Sometimes you just can't get it through peoples' heads.

Same here every time I stop logging the pounds come right back on very fast.
  • My friend put it to someone who asked him at a party the best way possible. "Oooh. I'm trying this really awesome new thing." and when they got really excited and asked him what it was, he said in the most excited voice ever "I'm eating healthy and exercising!"

He made a bigger point when everyone else was chowing down pizza and he took his chicken and broccoli out of the fridge.

I hope I don't make him sound like a jerk. He normally won't even talk about it, but when someone asks him and makes it seem like it's some big mystery...he gives them that response.

You can always tell how successful someone is going to be at losing weight by judging their reaction when you tell them how YOU lost weight. If they seem relieved and say "Really? It's that simple?" when you utter the dreaded words "diet and exercise," they're going to do great. If they make a face and roll their eyes, yeah, they're not going to be losing weight any time soon.

I gave up on that question long ago.

Now I just tell them what they want to hear; I ate an entire box of Twinkies and a half gallon of choclate ice cream in one sitting, then went to the Bibbilty Bobblety Boutque at Disney World where I was magically transformed.

I agree with this 100%. The only people I've known to lose weight and keep it off were the ones who exercised and ate right. The people who have used pills, supplements, or crazy diets might have lost a lot to begin with... but then gained it all back plus some more. Anecdotal evidence, for sure... but it rings true to me.

A friend of mine gets very dismissive when she asks how I'm losing weight and I tell her that I'm counting my calories. She says she doesn't want to have to do all that work... but continues to think she can lose weight by magical thinking.

Yeah, it amazes me how many people think there is some super secret magic trick to it and totally don't believe you when you say "diet and exercise." I actually love when thin, fit people notice my weight loss and say to me "Have you been working out a lot?" because that tells me that they get it ... they assume I have put some effort into it because they know that's what it takes. They don't immediately assume I must be starving myself or taking some stupid pill.

I like to tell people that losing weight is simple ... not easy, but simple. Eat better, exercise more. That's it. There's nothing else to it.
