who's already been losing weight on MFP? I got the book for a few ideas on how to eat cleaner. I've had powdered donuts, carmel-filled chocolate bars, kitkats, doritos, poptarts, chocolate pancakes, rice krispies treats, and a bunch of other junk in just the past four days. I've been in my calorie goal perfectly fine, but I know that it's still not good for me.

Anyways, anybody who's already been losing weight with just counting calories had any results with eating the 17 Day Diet recommendations? Apparently you're allowed all the fresh veggies and lean meats you want. (In the first 17 days at least), but you have restricted servings on eggs, dairy, and fruit. I'm getting a little sick of counting calories lately; I either get obsessive or sloppy. I'm honestly NOT interested in rapid weight loss or anything. Just need a few guidelines and advice and meal plans to get me to stop eating all this junk... even if it fits in my calorie goals.

  • My hubby likes to go on the diets that restrict or eliminate carbs...I thought about trying the 17 day diet but I don't like thinking any food is "off limits" and prefer to just watch calories, fat, etc. and I like my carbs--and won't give them up completely so I don't think I would like the 17 day diet. But I have heard some people have tried it and like the diet...different lifestyle changes for different people I guess!!

I haven't heard of the 17 day diet. I can tell you it's better to lose small amounts steadily with lifestyle changes. Any fad diet won't keep the pounds off once you go back to your regular habits.

I'm a vegetarian, but that by no means stops me from occasionally eating sweets. Last week, I moved into a new apartment and prepared puppy chow for all my neighbors. Needless to say, it was extremely tempting (and, ok, I indulged a little).

You need to still let yourself have the "bad" foods every now and then. If you are too extreme or harsh on yourself you'll just get frustrated. The key is, you need to be mindful of what you eat a lot more often than you're not. I've lost 80 pounds since I started making lifestyle changes. There is no secret to weight-loss: it's just healthy eating and exercise.

If you lose weight rapidly, you are putting your self in danger of fun things like gall stones and hair loss. Eat healthy foods and you'll get to eat more of them. I get to eat a great deal of fruits and vegetables because they are not calorie dense. I could probably eat 5 carrots for a 100 calories, or 2 apples for 140. An orange is about 80. A banana about 100.

Another good tip is substitutions. Instead of putting butter on your baked potato, use spicy ketchup and black pepper. Instead of loading up on salt, try buying powdered garlic and onion. It will add a ton of flavor, but eat it when you're home for the day, because your breath will STINK!

I was on the 17 day diet for the month of January. Then I went back to college in February and couldn't stay on it exactly but kept with the concepts it taught me. I drank only water (as opposed to soda), didn't have huge portions, made good choices, etc. I started the beginning of the year at 209.9 pounds, and (I don't know my weight at the end of January) on February 21st I weighed 189.5 pounds. The 17 day diet worked wonders for me, and I've still lost weight ever since. I didn't do MFP until a week ago, and I'm currently at 166 pounds.
