In a perfect world 10 city blocks make up a mile.
Make sure you start off really slow and easy. Lots of runners try to go WAY too fast at first and then end up injured and hating running.0 -
Not sure what city you live in, so I wouldn't be able to tell you how many blocks make up a mile. But consider this - depending what kind of shape you are presently in, gauge the amount of time you want to run by that. Personally, I'm not a big fan of running, so when I get on the treadmill I will do an easy 9 minute mile pace for 2 miles, then I will do sprints. Sprints are the BEST way to burn calories and shed fat - the short burst of intensity will increase your heart rate to fat-burning mode. I usually do a full-out sprint for 45second to a minute, then I walk for 1 minute and 30 seconds, then sprint again. This type of exercise will really kick your butt into gear! TRY IT!0

There is a phone app that is fit to 5 k and it shows you intervals to start a running program that will allow you to run a 5 k in time. It is a great app.0

Look up the couch to 5k running programs online and it will give you some ideas for how to get started with a running plan. I know that when I started running 2 years ago I could practically feel the breeze in my hair and the speed in my legs and then I got out of my fantasy world real quick when i couldn't run for 90 seconds..LOL! I was devasted by how hard it felt compared to when I was a kid so I had to start off really slow with a beginners program. 2 years later....I still think it's hard, but I ran 5 miles last night so I've made some good progress. Good luck to you!0
