Sugar Goals

So I just added sugar to my main food tracking page. I never realized until now that my daily goal is 24 grams. Is it just me or is that unrealistically low? I mean my "healthy" snack choices today like a banana and an orange each had 11 or 12 grams of sugar each.

Is anyone else having problems not going over their sugar goal?

I'm going to look back in my food diary history, but I am pretty sure I go over somewhat every day.

Advice?

Take it in stride. Just try and stay away from refined sugars like soda and candy. A few pieces of fruit coupled with a variety of vegetables are great snacks that you can have every day. When you look at your sugar count think of what you ate, not necessarily how much you ate.

I think that it hugely depends on the kind of sugar you are having. If it comes from fruit it's ok sugar but if you're eating over 24 grams of sugar coming from other sources (i.e. cakes, cookies, cereals etc) it's not good to go over. Just be careful of the types and you'll be ok. I find it impossible to stay under my sugar limit but I eat a lot of fruit and I don't sweat it :) Hope that's helpful.

I have a very similar issue. When I eat Chobani yogurt, I get 20 grams of my 24 grams just at breakfast! I almost ALWAYS go over because I enjoy fruit and raisins (not sure what you consider those lol). It's so tough to keep under by I don't eat processed sugars so I try not to get too antsy about it :)

    Best of luck!

If you're finding that goal unrealistic, and are still losing weight, you can always manually change the goal. The Goals section is on the My Home tab.

I read (but it WAS on the internet so consider the source) to keep your sugar between 6-10% of your calories. Or 30% of your carb intake.

Either way for me on 1400 cals/day, 10% would be 140 calories, divide by 4 (the number of cals in a gram of sugar), = 35 grams/day.

I try not to eat refined sugars at all (usually not very successful - guess I don't "try" hard enough), and like others worry less about natural sugars - I get alot in my milk and of course fruit too.

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I guess I have some days where my sugar comes from "good" sources and other days where it comes from "not-so-good" sources. I have been loosing weight so something is working. I figure what I eat now has to have less sugar then I ate before making this lifstyle change.

I looked back on my diary and most days I am only over by less than 5 grams... other days over by 20. Oh well, I will just try to stay away from refined sugars.

    Thanks again!
