Home Workouts

I do most of my workouts on my lunch breaks. I do fitness classes 45 minutes per day / 4 days per week. I'm looking to add more at home. However, I have 3 kids, all under the age of 2 years old. They are ALWAYS under my feet and exercising is almost completely impossible, once I get home from work, make dinner, feed the family, give baths, and get everyone ready for bed. By this time, it's dark outside... anyone have any quick workouts that can be done at home?

I picked up a leslie sansone walk away the pounds dvd for 5 bucks at walmart not too long ago. I also love my WII Fit Plus. At work I have the chance to walk the property at lunches or just for GP to check up on employees or I stashed my stepper under my desk and when I am alone (there are only 2 of us in here) I will get up and step when I can. Sometimes for just 15 min. but it's something! At night I have to wait for kis to get to bed too and I really do not like to exercise to I gotta make it something I can look forward to if not at least detest LOL.

do you live in a safe neighborhood where a late walk would be okay?

Go earlier in the evening and push the kids--you burn more calories that way. Just do everything you do with gusto. Run up and down the steps. Walk fast around the house when picking up. While kids are soaking in tub, stand there in front of them and do squats.

Leslie has a walking dvd (I believe) with children involved...she also encourages children to walk with you if they are in the room...they might get a kick out of walking a little with you...:) just some thoughts :) (I love Leslie Sansone - starting a month of leslie this May)

My mom sends me this website once a month or so: http://gainfitness.com/quick_workout/show

I finally clicked on it today b/c I have a lot of travel coming up which means no gym time. Its actually really helpful, check it out.

If hubby's home, why not go for a power walk after you put the kids to bed. If you hate or are concerned about walking alone at night, invite a neighbour or a friend to tag along. It'll make it less boring and the time will go by much quicker.

I love Leslie I have 3 of her dvds and and started on a different one yesterday and it is kicking my butt. Just finished 5 miles of it and I feel like a sweat factory. I always see results when I do those dvds.

There are some great quick videos on YouTube. I start my morning and end my day with AM/PM Yoga Routines on Youtube--15-30 minutes and 45-90 calories for simple routines. Get search around youtube for fitness ideas--it's free.

I highly recommend EA Sports Active 2. I know it is totally cliché to say but it really is like a personal trainer in a box and it is available for a number of gaming systems. For the Wii it was $40.

I have two kids, not three.... so my answer is a bit different.
I work out with them in the room, either mimicing me, helping me, playing at my feet, or playing with each other. Two or three days a week I'll do Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred or Ripped in 30.... they are short and intense. I can usually get through them with minimal child re-direction. :-) It did take me a few days to "train" them to not tackle me during ab work.
The other days I push them in a double jogger and run.... that is a workout all on it's own............ I know they make triple joggers that might be worth the investment for you.

4 45 minute workouts a week is plenty already. Are you trying to reduce those down and workout more at home?

No, I'm trying to add more workouts. I'd like to be doing something every day of the week, whether it be a little walk or more. I'm tired of being fat, although I know my problem is food. I hate the "diet" part of "diet & exercise"!
  • I would suggest Jillian Michaels 30 Day Shred (22 mins) & Jillian Michaels Yoga Meltdown (30 mins). Both great workouts and are quick. the Yoga isn't like regular Yoga, she has you moving and burning those calories quick! You can find both at Walmart or Target for under $10 a piece.

I would suggest Jillian Michael's as well as they are shorter videos and are intense. However, having two kids under 3 myself, the only time I can get my workouts in without them distracting me is to get up and get them done before they get up. So having the shorter videos is nice so I am only getting up a half hour earlier than normal. HTH

No offense but the walking isnt going to show the results that you want. You need to do exercises that are going to burn calories esp if you are looking for short workouts. Try this:

    Circuit - 35 seconds; 10 seconds rest; 21 rounds = 15.75 Mins

    1. Figure 8 squats w medicine ball - 20, 20, 20
    2. Tricep Dips - 20, 20, 20
    3. Side plank twists - 20, 15, 17
    4. Squat to sky twists - 12, 12, 12
    5. Dyanmic Push ups - 12, 8, 7
    6. Burpee box to w lbs in hand to bend over row 7, 5, 5
    7. Bridge holds - 35 seconds x 3

PS I copied and pasted from a forum I posted the numbers are the reps I did. You can do much less or more.....

I'm not trying to be mean just honest because I have learned this the hard way but you can't out exercise a bad diet!!! Weight loss is 80% DIET 20% exercise. Sad but true :)

Actually a lot of people lose weight while doing the walking DVD's because they are higher intensity walking (you are walking 4.5 - 5 mph) plus she boosts you at the end. You do more then just walk, it uses all types of muscles, plus it tones you up. I look 100% better after using Leslies dvds then I did when I was just lifting weights and trying different workouts on youtube. You burn around 600 cals with it and that (with a great diet) will help you loose weight. Plus it is something that a lot of people with children or who are not ready for really high intensity workouts with intervals that are longer can do without worrying about children trying to play with them in the process.

Of course you are going to loose lbs when you first start it bc it is something different but 4 weeks later its going to be "the scale stopped". Walking isnt going to get you the results you want in the long run. Also, interval training and circuit training are the best way to burn calories in a short amount of time so that would be IDEAL for "people with children". If you can watch a DVD with a kid you can increase your intensity. That said I believe any exercise is better than nothing but not if your looking for a change. In order to change your body you have to shock your muscles and sorry walking isnt the answer.

OP, if you have cable, check out the ONDemand feature, I have Comcast and there are a ton of free workouts. 30 Day Shread, Billy Blanks, etc., the days that I can't make it to the gym, I go through there and find something that fits the time I have.

I have younger kids as well and tend to find myself working out at night, which I was told is not the best. They always want your attention when its "me" time. I use DVD's at home and have an eliptical as well. I am forcing myself to get up in the earlier AM while the kids are still sleeping and before work, I tell myself if I dont get up now and do this, I will hate myself later for I wont have the time, something always comes up. Good luck.
