birthcontrol ruined my body

Options
I've had the nexoplanon birth control implant for a year and 3 months...I've gained 50 or so pounds in that amount of time...and I can't seem to lose it(not from the lack of trying) I have tried to diet and work out regularly and it just isn't helping. Any advice?
Sincerely

    Common questions:
    • How long have you been trying to lose the 50lbs?
    • Have you been weighing solid foods and measuring liquids?
    • How long did you give your workout regimen before deciding it wasn't working?

Certain types of birth control can cause weight gain. How long does your implant last? would it be worth having it taken out and using a different type? Apparently the coil is meant to be quite good...

Ok the birth control itself didn't make you gain 50lbs I know hormones etc can cause weight gain ive been on every birth control and done IVFs I gained so much each treatment but honestly the hormones made me lethargic so I didn't exercise and I craved carb rich foods and didn't weigh or measure and so that was how I gained over 40lbs. I would go chat with a medical professional yes the birth control may be the wrong 1 for you but its a secondary reason for gaining weight primarily its how you feel while on it. I have fought long and hard to get myself back down to healthy after 4 different birth controls 2 ivfs and 3 pregnancies if I can do it anyone can feel free to add me as a friend id love to support you but ultimately it starts with you 1lb at a time motivation and accurately weighing and measuring ( yes people bang on about that) but for me this is what has seen the weight fall off. I would also recommend some exercise walking or strength or whatever you can do it isn't all about exercise food is 80% of weight loss but getting up and moving makes you feel so good and that sense of achievement is addictive and before you know it the scale will be going down

No they don't...there is not one medicatio on the planet the causes weight gain while eating at maitenance or in a deficit...the only way you gain "weight" is either through water retention or excess calories.

To the OP...BC can cause an increase in appetite but they do not cause 50lbs of weight gain...you did this by eating too much. Start logging accurately by weighing solids and measuring liquids ....

I have used two of the most "notorious" bc methods that people blame for weight gain for a total of 15 years...I was fat when I went on them stayed fat and got fatter (eating too much and not moving enough) I lost weight when I decided I had enough, gained it back etc...

In the last 18 months I have used both Mirena and Depo and have lost almost 60lbs...how?

    Calorie deficit.

Yep! If you think it's to blame OP this should be your first route to work with your doctor to explore other options

As stated, a lot of hormonal bc causes increase in appetite, which in turn cause people to gain weight. Talk to your Dr. about a different type if it's not working for you.

Find your BMR or TDEE. Create a deficit that you can stick with. Get a food scale, log your food. Move more :)

    Good luck

Hmmm. Some hormones can cause weight gain. Prednisone being one of them. Was on it for 19 days and put on 5+ pounds that continued after, for at least 10 more days. I had a decrease in appetite, did not eat much and yes, I retain some fluid. But my body started to change. With a flabby belly, and after having gone to mt DR approx. 30 days after, my body fat had increased by about 3%. And my weight by then, approx. 9 pounds. It was all around my stomach. I am not a medical professional in any way.. this was just my experience. I've looked up Prednisone and it's effects and am I glad I am off of it and will never go near it again.

So OP, take the advice given by everyone here. See your Dr. and let him/her know that you may want to try another type of birth control. Find the right amount of calories that is right for you and log everything that you eat for at least 5 weeks to see a change.

Mean what you say and say what you mean...

If you say BC caused Weight gain I call BS it doesn't.
If you say my increased appetite due to my BC has caused weight gain how do you handle it...you get the answers you need.

It's not being pedantic as claiming BC alone makes you gain weight is a fallacy period and it isn't an unimportant detail to include that your increased appetite (which can be controlled by the way with eating lots of fiber and protien)

And because a lot of people want to blame everything but how much they eat for weight gain when in reality it comes down to CICO.

    5lbs=water retention

as for BF% increasing about 3% in 30 days I would question that by asking how BF was measured.

And when you gain actual weight not just water weight it is not just in one area.

    All of this.

Saying "BC made me gain weight" sounds like a cop out or an excuse. Increased appetite isn't in your control when you're on medication, but putting food in your mouth is. Own it.

Estrogen in high doses can cause weight gain due to increased appetite and fluid retention. Today's birth control pills have much lower amounts of hormones than those of years ago. (Which is where this myth came from.) Thus, weight gain is usually minimal and only last 2-3 months - the amount of time your body takes to adjust to new BC methods/hormones.

Increased appetite is probably where your weight gain is coming from in this case, as fluid retention would not amount to 50 lbs.

New BC method - with less estrogen - maybe progesterone only pill/implant?
Calorie deficit to lose the gained weight. Eat less than you burn.

Right. Cuz you're a specialist in this field? BF was measured with calipers. 9 lbs of water wieght? No way. Yes, I understand that when you gain weight it's just not in one particular place. My entire body configuration changed within that short period of time. Look up Prednisone. You'll undertstand what it can do to a human body. Oh wait... don't bother. Seems that either you already know the answer or you'll have some short smarty pants comment for that too.

    No thanks.

This. Very good advice. A little tough to read with the run-on sentences and no paragraphs, so I think it may have been skipped over, but you are right in what you are saying.

First, make sure you're weighing and measuring and tracking everything you eat and that you're not overestimating exercise calories and eating them back.

Second, if you really think it's the BC (and it's possible), get rid of it and use something else.

Third, I had Mirena for three years and I would swear it made me gain weight. Turns out I have Hashimoto's and a really stupid doctor who couldn't add two and two and figure it out. So, the first thing you need to do is get blood work done and make sure they run a thyroid panel. And look at it yourself. If your TSH is above 2 (even though 4.5 is the limit for "normal"), ask to see an endocrinologist. Also get tested for PCOS.

I thought Mirena caused the weight gain. I still think it may have made the problem worse, but it didn't cause it.

Calipers are notoriously inaccurate. It's difficult to pinch the exact same every time, and you can get two completely different readings from two different people on the same day. Heck, I was pinched at 20% BF...and I was still over 200 lbs at the time. That was NOT accurate - I was probably closer to 35% BF.

Prednisone is a corticosteroid, not a hormone (that I know of). But, being a steroid, it can definitely cause an increased appetite. But, bottom line, you don't have to give in to that urge. it's a choice. Yes, the medication can make it more difficult, but you know how many calories you can eat per day, if you consume more than that, there's a good chance you could wind up gaining weight if it continues for days/weeks/months.
