First, make sure you're weighing and measuring and tracking everything you eat and that you're not overestimating exercise calories and eating them back.

Second, if you really think it's the BC (and it's possible), get rid of it and use something else.

Third, I had Mirena for three years and I would swear it made me gain weight. Turns out I have Hashimoto's and a really stupid doctor who couldn't add two and two and figure it out. So, the first thing you need to do is get blood work done and make sure they run a thyroid panel. And look at it yourself. If your TSH is above 2 (even though 4.5 is the limit for "normal"), ask to see an endocrinologist. Also get tested for PCOS.

I thought Mirena caused the weight gain. I still think it may have made the problem worse, but it didn't cause it.

I doubt its a "really stupid doctor" I bet its more like 95% of the people who complain about weight gain are gaining because they're eating more than they think and moving less than they think.

Don't use your BC as a scapegoat... Use it as the diving board. It is a tool that influenced you to go in one direction, unfortunately. Also unfortunately, switching methods or quitting BC altogether may just influence you in the same direction. Take it from me - I quit the pill in May... My weight skyrocketed from 20lbs by the end of August, and I've been struggling to fight it and bring it back down since.

Did you ever read Harry Potter? Think of Mad-Eye Moody. "Constant vigilance." That's how you fight it and bring your weight down. Every time you think of food, train yourself to imagine "How far back will this set me?"

Anyways, the gist is: your birth control didn't put you where you are. It might have been the leading influence on your behavior, but just like any other influence (peer pressure?), it's ultimately you who did this to you.

Hmmm. Some hormones can cause weight gain. Prednisone being one of them. Was on it for 19 days and put on 5+ pounds that continued after, for at least 10 more days. I had a decrease in appetite, did not eat much and yes, I retain some fluid. But my body started to change. With a flabby belly, and after having gone to mt DR approx. 30 days after, my body fat had increased by about 3%. And my weight by then, approx. 9 pounds. It was all around my stomach. I am not a medical professional in any way.. this was just my experience. I've looked up Prednisone and it's effects and am I glad I am off of it and will never go near it again.

So OP, take the advice given by everyone here. See your Dr. and let him/her know that you may want to try another type of birth control. Find the right amount of calories that is right for you and log everything that you eat for at least 5 weeks to see a change.

    no it doesn't...

    5lbs=water retention

as for BF% increasing about 3% in 30 days I would question that by asking how BF was measured.

And when you gain actual weight not just water weight it is not just in one area.

Right. Cuz you're a specialist in this field? BF was measured with calipers. 9 lbs of water wieght? No way. Yes, I understand that when you gain weight it's just not in one particular place. My entire body configuration changed within that short period of time. Look up Prednisone. You'll undertstand what it can do to a human body. Oh wait... don't bother. Seems that either you already know the answer or you'll have some short smarty pants comment for that too.

    No thanks.

Calipers are pretty inaccurate. They are good for a quick home assessment, but their readings should really be taken with a grain of salt. The only truly accurate ways to measure body fat are the dunk tank and Dexa scans.

And 9lbs of water weight is pretty normal...

Yeah ok... the only birth control that I gain massive amounts of weight on is Progesterone only (aka, the mini-pill, Depo shot, and the implant) even though dietary habits don't change. I don't gain on other forms of birth control. While it's not the birth control form per se, the hormones in them do make it easier for some women to gain weight faster.

@karynmari I suggest, based on my own personal experience, seeing if you can have the implant taken out and try using another form for birth control that isn't progesterone only.

Certain types of birth control can cause weight gain. How long does your implant last? would it be worth having it taken out and using a different type? Apparently the coil is meant to be quite good...

No they don't...there is not one medicatio on the planet the causes weight gain while eating at maitenance or in a deficit...the only way you gain "weight" is either through water retention or excess calories.

To the OP...BC can cause an increase in appetite but they do not cause 50lbs of weight gain...you did this by eating too much. Start logging accurately by weighing solids and measuring liquids ....

I have used two of the most "notorious" bc methods that people blame for weight gain for a total of 15 years...I was fat when I went on them stayed fat and got fatter (eating too much and not moving enough) I lost weight when I decided I had enough, gained it back etc...

In the last 18 months I have used both Mirena and Depo and have lost almost 60lbs...how?

    Calorie deficit.

Why is everyone on here so pedantic. You understood what she was getting at.

Because the OP was making excuses and excuses won't give you successful results. Learn where the real problem lies, and find a solution that works. Don't blame the weight gain on birth control alone, blame the hormones or excess in calories.

OP, maybe talk to your Dr. about different options if you cannot control the increase in appetite. Calculate your TDEE and make sure you are consistently eating below that (10-20% below is a deficit). Make sure you are logging your calories accurately.

Different type of birth control?

There are lots of different types of birth control drugs for women, and they affect different women in different ways. Where some will drop weight, others will gain. Where some will get depressed, others will feel great. And if you don't like the side effects of one, try a different one.

This is why it's absolutely vital to go take it in pill form for a while and see how it affects you before getting an implant. Your doctor should have told you all this. If not, get a different doctor.

Definitely try other forms. I've been on BC for years and years and my weight responds to diet and exercise just like anyone else's does.

Not everything written here is about the OP, or any poster, for that matter. The second that people put aside their personal bias and start listening to facts is the moment where knowledge is gained.

that is not the point of highlighting a flaw in the reasoning.

it has nothing to do with "putting them in their place"
You do realize we get nothing out of this? right we are here to help- and I'm super proud to come in here and read at least three women highlight the fact that BC does NOT cause weight gain. SO AWESOME.

It's a hormone adjuster- and yeah- when you mess with hormones- you can wind up more hungry- which means you can possibly over eat- but you have to take responsibility for that.

Because what happens- is BC changes- or she goes off of it- and nothing happens- why because she still doesn't realize it's her responsibility to own up to what goes in her pie hole. Just like the rest of us smucks playing this game.

I've been on various BC for years- it's NEVER caused me to gain weight. I'm almost 100% certain the generic brand of seasonique is messing with me b/c I"m hungry constantly- but guess what- I still eat to my numbers- because the numbers never lie. not losing- then I'm eating to much or not accurate about something.

    period.
    plain.
    simple.

BC never caused me to gain weight; however, i feel like it was impeding my weight loss.. my doctor said it was possible since i had been on it for 3+ years or so. i decided to go off of it and have continued to lose weight through diet and exercise.

Birth Control did not ruin your body. If you believe that, then the obvious solution would be to get off birth control, which can cause weight gain (in the form of.. a baby).

Start weighing your food and logging every bite you eat. It's surprisingly easy once you have a week or two of logging (because the foods you commonly eat will already be at the top of the database for you). I'm at 49 lbs lost now. I was on hormonal birth control for 5 years.

Here are some studies on implanted hormonal birth control and weight gain. The verdict is that, although some women report weight gain, there has been no controlled study comparing women with and without the implant. The average increase in body weight in studies was less than 5 pounds over 2 years.

    Studies:

Zheng, SR; Zheng, HM; Qian, SZ; Sang, GW; Kaper, RF (1999), "A long-term study of the efficacy and acceptability of a single-rod hormonal contraceptive implant (Implanon) in health women in China", Eur J Contracept Reprod Health Care 4: 85–93.

Funk, Sidney; Funk S, Miller MM, Mishell DR Jr, Archer DF, Poindexter A, Schmidt J, Zampaglione E; Implanon US Study Group (May 2005). "Safety and efficacy of Implanon, a single-rod implantable contraceptive containing etonogestrel". Contraception 71 (5): 319–26.

I also have the Nexplanon in (for about a year now) and prior to that I had the Implanon for 3 years. It works great. No periods and no babies. I can't blame the birth control for weight gain. I ate a lot and a lot of junk but now I'm losing weight just fine with MFP. It's the excess calories that make you gain weight. Eat a deficit, exercise and drink lots of water. This sh** really works. :)

Hormones do in fact have a relation to weight gain and weight loss. Whether this is the OPs problem or not is a matter for her and her doctor. I would recommend talking to a medical professional to identify the real problem. Hormone imbalances (both too much and too little) can cause not only appetite changes, but also affect your metabolism. This is why people with thyroid problems have changes in their weight, and also why post-menopausal women and women who have had hysterectomies very often gain weight AND why they start gaining it in specific places (ie; their hips, thighs and abdomen). Hormones can be affected by not just medication, but also nutrition, sleep habits and stress. It is counter productive to anyone with a weight problem to tell them that all they need to do is just suck it up and eat less. And it's mean. Please don't assume that all weight problems start and end with a simple calorie count, just because it's your experience.

The OP needs to evaluate her changes in appetite and eating habits and see if that has played a part. She's the only one that can assess this part of the equation. Then she needs to talk to her doctor and have her hormone levels checked. Human beings are very complex and we all react differently to the things we put in our bodies. This particular BC could have hormones that are changing her metabolism and she may do well switching to another hormone, or stop using hormonal birth control all together. But that's for her to decide with medical advice.

OP 1) go talk to doctor, 2) weigh and measure food accurately and 3) add exercise to make you feel better.

The birth control isn't the main reason its how it affects your mood so you may not want to exercise ( you dont have to exercise to lose weight) but it will help your motivation it makes you feel good.

To actually gain that amount of weight its lifestyle so youre eating more than you think I stress weighing and measuring and logging accurately.

If your birth control is an issue because you are lethargic etc that's worth telling doctor but it alone cannot make you gain weight to gain weight you have more going in than out.

This is a battle I know well I have done it read my profile and ive blamed being pregnant ivf drugs you name it oh and my boyfriends a chef its his fault but you have to own it until you accept you have gained weight because of your behaviour and eating and lack of motivation etc nothing will change.

I really hope you take the constructive advice you've been given and see that only you can change things no new pill etc is going to reverse the affects of the current one but im proof you can go from 40lbs overweight to healthy after birth control ivf and pregnancy I did it and so you definitely can.
