so frustrated please help!

hi! so i'm 21 years old, 5'6 and 140 lbs. Over the past 2-3 years i've lost 23 lbs. My heaviest was around 163-165. I dropped down to 134-135 lbs (my lowest weight) a few months ago. Since then i've regained 5 lbs over the summer and i'm so frustrated with myself because i don't understand how it could be possible. I eat EXTREMELY well, and work out all the time. For awhile i was eating 1200 cal per day, sometimes eating back exercise calories. I realize this is a really low number to be eating and when i started to gain some weight I figured the best solution would be to up my calories a little more. So recently i've started upping it to 1400 however no weight seems to come off if anything i only seem to go up. I really can't take it it's driving me nuts! i need some solid advice because I've been trying absolutely everything. I'm currently on the insanity program, i'm in the middle of my 6th week and after this week i only have 3 weeks left to go. I haven't seen any results that I've been seeking so i'm thinking this exercise regime might not be best for me but I'm gonna ride the next 3 weeks out. I realize it's a lot harder to lose weight once you've already lost a substantial amount but I need help breaking this weight gain because it's really freaking me out. Thanks for taking your time to read this!

Open your diary so I (and hopefully others) can see specifics.

If you've been doing a low calorie diet for a long time, you're metabolic rate may be reduced from where it was before. You can fix it with a reverse diet. Since you switched to 1400 cal/day, how has your weight been changing every week?

Also, other than weight, are you tracking your progress? How are your body measurements changing? How is your body fat changing? Gaining weight is not automatically a bad thing. You may be adding some muscle. Are you getting better at doing Insanity workouts?

i am very near your measurements, same height, although i weight a little more than you do. i struggle, too. my weight is coming off very very slowly, more slowly than i would like, and much more slowly than it used to. so frustrating! i started today increasing my calories again and now i'm up to 1421. i am going to try that for a week. i log everything, measure everything precisely. i exercise alot, hit the gym 4 times a week and ride my bike daily. after a week, i will up my calories again. sometimes it is just difficult mentally to eat more, then gain weight, then know i have to up my calories again! hang in there!

oh, by the way, i am taking my measurements every monday, and i have lost tons of inches! so that might be something you might want to try. sometimes i will lose 1" in my waist or chest and not lose any pounds. it helps to see at least one number going down! LOL

Ditch the scale and start using body fat calipers (Recommend Slim Guide, everything else is junk) and/or a measurement tape. You're after fat loss and lean mass gains so your scale weight could be on the rise but you'd still be heading in the right direction.

You are gaining muscle most likely, you should check your measures as you're probably getting smaller. It's really hard for women not to freak out at the number on the scale, but remember muscle weighs more than fat, so it could be a good thing.

    No.

OP You are more than likely retaining water due to your increase in exercise. Remember the less you have to lose, the smaller that deficit is and the tighter your logging belt needs to be.
