Quest bars and stomach issues

Is anyone here who has IBS/Crohns/UC/SIBO/gastroparesis (or just general digestion problems) able to eat quest bars with no issues? I have had gastroparesis and possibly SIBO/IBS for 4yrs and have been eating quest bars for 1.5yrs with no problems. A naturopath I recently started working with said that the erythritol and IMO fiber in quest bars wreck your gut and that I should avoid them. My flareups happen randomly and are not connected with any single food. I'm currently in a flare and avoiding quest bars due to his directions but I'm wondering why because they have never given me issues. I'm seeing a gastroenterologist this Friday for an endoscopy and will ask him then, but just wanted to see if anyone else is able to handle them.
And yes, I think I finally know how to get rid of my stomach issues thanks to the naturopath so hopefully I'll be able to eat whatever and not have to worry about it.

I never used to have issues with quest bars but I did a few months ago. It was very dramatic (I was in the grocery store and almost didn't make it home in time) and now I avoid them and all alcohol sugars.0

I would rather have that issue as I suffer from pretty bad constipation. If they were fine before, it may have been something else you ate, I can't imagine them causing issues months down the road from when you started having them (if that's how long it was).

A lot of people have varying degrees of problems with sugar alcohols and IMO fiber. My daughter is so bothered by sugar alcohols she can't even use regular toothpaste.0

I've had sugar alcohols all the time and don't seem to be bothered by them, sorry to hear about your daughter.

I used to get gassy from too much sugarless gum but overall no big issues. And the fist time I bought a Quest bar, the Hi-Health employee warned me to eat maybe a half one first due to many people having gastro issues from the fiber. I guess some people are just sensitive to it.
It is kind of weird... a 'sugar' that passes through your gut undigested.0 -

Hmm, yea it seems so. I asked my gastroenterologist about it and she said they are fine even for people who have stomach issues. I did some more googling and apparently IMO fiber feeds good bacteria and encourages a good gut environment, so I'll keep eating them.

Really IBS is such a personal issue- if it doesn't bother you- then it's not an issue- then I'd say you're totally fine.
Mine happened randomly I couldn't ever lock down- she started giving dicycolmin (I think) and it helped- and eventually I weaned myself off of it and rarely have issues. Ultimately I find if I'm eating something regularly and it's causing problems- then I stop eating said thing.

Yea that's what I'm finding out through all my googling, unfortunately. I'll keep on eating them since they don't cause issues.
Did you ever lose weight due to IBS? My flareup has been going on for 3 weeks and the debilitating stomach pains have prevented me from eating (no appetite) and I'm down 10lbs already. I checked out dicyclomine and it would be helpful for me in that it reduces stomach and intestinal cramps but not for the other effect that it slows natural movements of the gut. Was diarrhea your issue? Sorry if it's getting too personal, you don't have to answer that if it makes you uncomfortable.0 -

no not really- I never found any consistent link to the food I was eating. I would just be stricken with debilitating cramps and chills and sweats. Like pulled over trying to drive home b/c I couldn't see straight- or curled up on the bathroom floor.
they would go away...
Then 10-15 min later - more cramps.
then maybe 5-15 min later I would need a bathroom- like 10 min ago.
it was so inconsistent and I couldn't self eliminate any "triggering" foods- so I finally went to the doctor after I pretty much *kitten* my own pants while I was trying to drive home- I just couldn't get to the side of the road fast enough- couldn't get over the guard rail fast enough. It was awful. (I got your TMI right here LMAO)- Thank god it was at night- and my best friend was gone- so it was just me- but hell I was miserable- that was the straw that broke the camels back on that one in terms of going to see someone- that was just unacceptable.
Mine never really caused weight loss b/c it was usually a week or two weeks- or even a month or so apart- nothing consistent.
So- if its' really impacting your life- I'd highly recommend going to see someone. Lifes to short to be in that much pain- and its' just not normal.
(now- I have had a lot less issues since I cut down on my bread/pasta consumption... I still eat them but a lot less- so I can see a SMALL sliver of that connected- but I eat sushi at least 2x a month with plenty of rice and it hasn't been an issue at this point- I wonder if my body was rejecting something else- and the bread/pasta/wheat stuff exacerbated it)
Whatever- I'll never know- I eat a lot of stuff at this point- and i don't even take the meds and I'm fine- but I used it for a long while and it really helped.
I wish you luck- being in that kind of pain really REALLY is miserable- no one should have to live like that!0 -

Hah, that was funny about the guardrail. I wish I had your problem as I have consolation like 24/7. Good to hear you didn't lose weight.
I'm currently 127lbs at 5'10 as a 25yr old guy so I'm pretty frickin thin, I haven't cracked 2K calories in 3 weeks. I'm seeing a gastroenterologist and actually getting an endoscopy done tomorrow. She thinks it's either SIBO or h pylori infection along with gastroparesis (which I'm taking medication for already), but the pain is ridiculous. Normally my flares last a couple days, maybe 5 at most, but I've had pain for the last three weeks and couldn't eat for two days at one point, it's pretty frustrating.
I feel the same way about bread and pasta. I rarely eat them now and can tolerate them a couple times a week when I'm not flaring, but when I am I have to avoid them. Thanks for the support, I'm hoping this flare ends soon because I can't workout when I'm flaring due to the pain and working out is my stress reliever, not to mention I love it.0 -

good luck!! Seriously I mean it- I hope you get some answer- I understand (a little anyway) how frustrating and horrible it can be. I was completely incapacitated with cramps when mine hit- I think I would have died already if they were days long.
Can you drink ensure type things? That might help at least up the calories a little- not nearly as satisfying as real food- but would help bump the numbers up and give your body some more calories to fight whatever is going on.

Hi I know about sibo and ibs and gastro paresis a bit. I have ibsc. My mom has diverticulitis ( which is possible for you to have) she has that thing with her esophageal tract narrowing I forget what the name is. Well anyway I know if you have sibo you should do the gaps or the fodmaps diets. These help heal the gut and eliminate foods that cause issues. Id check for celiacs chrohns as well. Taking pills if you do have gastro paresis you will have to chop up and put in a smoothie. Your nutrition will have to be pureed food because your gut is not digesting so this helps. Avoid foods rhat cause acid like tomatoes, bell peppers and onions. Foods to avoild for diverticulitis are popcorn, foods with small seed, corn, rice, peanuts or nuts ( has to be a fine nut butter if you do) and eat more fibre foods. I hope you find answers and you can add me if you want!0

Thanks! Yea I had to leave work early one day because I couldn't stand it. I've tried ensure but I really can't tolerate it when I'm flaring. Thanks for the suggestion, I appreciate the help.

Thanks for all the advice! How was your mom diagnosed? I seem to have a lot of the symptoms of diverticulitis but a number of stomach problems have the same symptoms so it's hard to know which one you have without getting the proper tests. How do you manage your ibsc? Does it ever cause you to lose weight?
I've actually been on the FODMAP diet for the past week or so but it has not been helping. My flares are not tied to any one specific food, they come on randomly. My gastroenterologist will check for celiacs and h pylori during my endoscopy tomorrow. I hope I don't have celiacs as I love breakfast sandwiches hah. I'll add you, thanks again for all the help!

Hi its been a littlr while but with the divirtuculitis it was a really bad infection she was hospitalized for a blockage and that was whenshe was dxd. My ex had these horrible pains and he was dxd with diverticulitis. She later had to have a colonoscopy for the diagnosis. For her barrets which I think has become gastroparesis she had a special contrast xray done that confirmed her esophagus is narrowed and discolored from where the acud ate away. Then there have been more bacterial infection like sibo that are only detectable in a special blow test where you blow in a tube. My ibsc never causes weight loss just pain. I have fewer issues than before I notice small amounts of veggies fresh and not much red meats has helped as well as not too much processed foods breads or pastas and a stool softner and flaxseed meal in a smoothie helps.0
