Piotr Naskrecki was taking a nighttime walk in a rainforest in Guyana, when he heard rustling as if something were creeping underfoot. When he turned on his flashlight, he expected to see a small mammal, such as a possum or a rat.
"When I turned on the light, I couldn't quite understand what I was seeing," said Naskrecki, an entomologist and photographer at Harvard University's Museum of Comparative Zoology.
A moment later, he realized he was looking not at a brown, furry mammal, but an enormous, puppy-size spider.

I saw that too. I said, out loud, in my office, "The words 'puppy-sized' and 'spider' should never be used in the same sentence!" The guy is a freakin' loon to even be taking the picture, never mind having his hand in the frame for size comparison! Open your desk, take out a ruler, look at the 12-inch mark... holy mama!!0

But its prickly hairs aren't the birdeater's only line of defense; it also sports a pair of 2-inch-long (5 centimeters) fangs.
It eats birds. It is a spider, THAT EATS BIRDS.

Well, technically it digests the bird externally and then drinks it...0

Nature, you scary0

Only thing that would make that worse is if it had wings.0

Okay, Australia is now officially off my list of places I might like to visit someday. Ditto for wherever it is that those people had to have their house tented to kill off the 5,000 brown recluse spiders that were infesting it.0
