i got a great deal on a used elptical today. ($30!!) it is a manual one, but does have a knob you can maually turn to increase the resistance. it also have the moving arms. it does not have a clock, calorie tracker or anything like that. it does work very well though! my question is, how should i log it? would it be accurate to log it under eliptical? i tried it out some, and if i turn the resistancy to the half way mark, it is a tough workout. (so i am going to start at just slightly below half and work my way up) any thoughts, suggestions or tips about working out with elipticals would be great!! thanks!

I would get a HRM. It would be the most accurate way to figure your calories burnt. That is an awesome deal btw!0

Have you thought about getting a heart rate monitor? It will accurately tell you how many calories you are burning while working out, no matter how high or low you turn the resistance knob. Generally, with a decent resistance, you will average about 100 calories per every ten minutes. However, this can increase significantly the more resistance you add to your work-out. My elliptical also has a resistance knob and also records calories, but once I got a heart rate monitor, I found that the elliptical grossly over-estimated my calorie burn. A heart rate monitor is the most accurate for the money!! Good luck!!0

Get a Heart Rate monitor. You can get one at WalmMart for like $30. It is going to be the most accurate. As far as the workout goes don't try to kill yourself on that thing. You won't last 5 minutes if you try to do too much. Start out slow and stay on it as long as you can. I'd rather have less resistance but be able to work out for 30 minutes than have a lot of resistance and only be able to stay on it for 5-10 minutes. I love mine. I just burnt 444 calories in 35 minutes. You should be sweating your butt off by the 15 minute mark. Good luck.0

I totally agree with this. Start out on a low setting so that you can do 20-30 minutes.0
