1200 Not Eating Enough Message

I eat more than 1200 calories a day and it still gives me the not eating enough message. Why? I'm on the iPhone app.

what are your daily calories set for?
  • It's 1350. And I actually ate 1460 today but still gave me that message. Happens every day now.

My net drops below 1200 a lot because I don't eat back all my calories, never get the warning.

At a guess, I'd say it's because you're male. AFAIK, the 1200 calorie minimum is recommended for women. 1350 sounds incredibly low for a man. I'm both short and female and my MFP set goal is still higher than that when on the lightly active level. I don't know the exact amount, but I'd expect the male minimum to be at least 1500.

What's your height, current weight, activity level and loss rate set to? The latter probably needs tweaking, it may be too aggressive.

It looks to me like the iphone app gives the message if you are under 1500 for males and 1200 for females, but the message text hasn't been changed to reflect that yet. It still cites 1200 as the critical level.

I think the message in the web site changed, too? Good for them. It makes a little more sense now.

For safe weight loss, the National Institutes of Health recommends no less than 1000-1200 calories for women and 1200-1500 calories for men.

Because 1200 (and even 1400) is too low for a male, especially one who only has 13 pounds to lose

You guys realize his question was why is he getting a message saying he's eating under 1200 when he's not? Not 'how much should I eat'?

Okay, I just went and "completed" my day to get the warning message, because I'll be honest it's been a LONG time since I've seen it...

Based on your total calories consumed today, you are likely not eating enough

For safe weight loss, the National Institutes of Health recommends no less than 1000-1200 calories for women and 1200-1500 calories for men.

Even during weight loss, it's important to meet your body's basic nutrient and energy needs. Over time, not eating enough can lead to nutrient deficiencies, unpleasant side effects & other serious health problems.

    To safely meet your goals:
Focus on consuming nutrient-rich foods and beverages
Check your progress in MyFitnessPal throughout the day
Add nutritious snacks between meals as needed

So I'm going to guess that eating under 1500 will trigger the message for men, and under 1200 will trigger the message for women.

OP you're under 1500 calories for the day, then you're falling below the NIH recommendations, hence the warning.

It must be triggered at under 1500 for men; it's 1000 for women

Yes, but the iphone app has a different warning. It tells you that you're eating under 1200 when you're not.

Triggered at 1200 for men. This is fine though because we aren't all 6'+ tall. :P

You would have to be a very short, older, sedentary man for 1200 to be the right amount though.

As a comparison, I was a 50 yr old, 5 ft 3 in woman, only lightly active and it still set me at 1460

Question asker, MFP uses "net" calories. If you exercise and log exercise calories, that number is deducted from how much you ate. So you could eat 1800, burn off 900 by running for an hour and half and trigger the message

It may be triggered at a different level for men... I don't know. But as a female... I only get the warning if I TOTAL less than 1200 (don't worry, this has happened maybe three times in 6 months). However, I've seen in some cases the app gets glitchy and counts more calories than is logged at the daily total... Or vice versa... It counts less calories than is logged. One of my friends asked me once why I only eat 500-600 calories a day when in actuality I've always been between 1200-1500. So, it's entirely possible you're dealing with an app glitch.

It's not a matter of 'net'. If you change your profile to 'male', go to the iphone app and log 1400 calories and close your diary, it puts up a message saying you're eating under 1200. It's just a bug.

Perhaps the "bug" is that it doesn't update the displayed message to 1500 for men

Right, that's what I think. I think they changed it to 1500 recently (?) and haven't updated the message yet.
  • Thanks for the replies. I'm guessing it's a bug as well. It was MFP who recommended that I only eat 1350 to lose 1 lb a week.

I'm male and only 5' 2" so I have fewer calories to burn.
  • And perhaps the bug is that MFP set my goal to 1350 when it should be a minimum of 1500 for men.

It's kind of weird how it says "... no less than 1200-1500 for men". That's a big spread.
