Hi Everyone! Congrats on all your accomplishments. Can someone help me about Calories and food choices. I rarely ever have time to cook. I am really committed to my new calorie based diet and this site is of great help. But I was wondering, if I do stick to my alotted calories, but I eat fast food based on their nutritional information, will I still lose weight? and I don't mean subway, but if I add a Big Mac as one of my meals, will it still work? Has anyone ever lost this way?

  • I have to say that the fat content will hurt your weight loss, let alone the cholest. The key to losing weight is also eating healthy. Sorry!

In one meal at some fast food places you can easily hit your daily calories....with just ONE meal.
I don't know, you'd have to be very strict with what you ate and where you ate.
Which doesn't seem fun to me.

It would save you a lot of calories and money if you made, say, a turkey sandwich instead of a big mac. It would take just as much time (or less) than going through a drive through and you could eat a lot more for the same calories. When you get home from the grocery store wash and slice some vegetables into portioned containers, zip-loc bags, whatever. that way you and quick grab and go in a healthier way!

Also, when you do cook a meal (soup, lasagna, etc.), make extra and freeze it. That way you can quick heat up the leftovers or take them to work and zap them in the microwave!

I cook quite a bit at home, but understand when you're busy or tired and just don't want to and sometimes..just don't know how. I go for a Healthy Choice can of soup, a lean frozen meal, or a easy to make sandwich at home. It takes a few minutes to heat up or prepare and you can eat MORE food in place of one burger. It may have more sodium then if you chose to cook that meal yourself, but it's still better then a Big Mac.
  • Yes you could lose weight as long as you stay under your calories. But the portion would be so small eventually your body would be very hungry, one big mac meal a day would not keep me full!

I think that you can eat anything you want and lose weight as long as your stay in your calorie zone, but is it healthy? All the fat that is in fast food will go straight to your arteries, clogging them up. You will lack the proper nutrients and your body will react to that.

Have fast food ocassionaly and try to prepare and freeze meals ahead of time on your days off. This way, all you have to do is heat it up when you get home.

you would still lose weight as long as you stay within your calories. But over time your body would face starvation because you cannot possibly get the nutrients you need to live from a big mac. And I agree, putting together a sandwich takes less time than driving through the drive thru.

I still eat fast food, especially on the weekends. The sodium content is no good... I eat up retaining water pretty badly by Monday.

Look up the menus for all the fast food places. Look at the caloric content of the foods and try to figure out what you'd like to eat that will keep you in your calorie zone. I think the Big Mac has about 350 calories, and a medium fry has about 350 calories too. It's a hefty meal if you are only eating 1200 cals a day (for example). You may decide to eat a Big Mac but pair it with a side salad and low cal dressing instead, or do a really high impact workout to combat that meal!!

It's really a matter of choices. Over time, my mind is taking control. I no longer want high calorie meals (fast food or sit down restaurant) because I realize two things, #1 how much I love losing weight, and how that food hinders me, and #2, how long it will take me to exercise off that meal in order for it to not impact my weight loss goals.

Stick with eating within your alotted calories and exercising like you are supposed to, and I'll bet that over time, you find yourself not wanting as much fast food, and being happier with whatever you can throw together quickly at home instead.

I think once in a while it would be ok if you work out a lot and have enough calories, but I agree with what others have said. It wouldn't be very healthy to spend all of your alloted calories on one sandwhich, and eventually you would crack from being so hungry all the time, because a big mac has way too many calories to be a severl-time-a-week lunch, but yet it's not going to fill you for the whole day.

If you must go the fast food route, make healthier choices, like the southwestern salad with grilled chicken at Mcdonalds (FYI you only need half the dressing in the packet which = half the calories), the martha's vineyard salad at Arby's is awesome and I would eat it even if I weren't watching my calories. You can also get sandwhiches and wraps at most fast food places (just watch the condiments, those will kill ya) and subway IS just about as quick as Mcdonalds if you're on the go.

Changing to healtheir foods isn't that bad....I still eat taco bell and long john silvers and such, just not in the same way I used to. I eat it a lot less often, and I make better choices, like two chicken planks instead of three, nachos supreme instead of nachos bel grande, oh and the fresco menu at taco bell isn't too bad.

If you want to have a Big Mac every week or so, that's fine. Shoot, if you don't care about the possible health effects and you are only concerned with weight loss, eat one every day. No food--regardless of the fat content or anything else--will automatically stop your fat loss if you're in a caloric deficit. If that were the case, peanut butter would be THE worst food to eat, but table sugar would be fine, and obviously it doesn't quite work like that.
That said, a Big Mac would use up a lot of calories for just one meal, and you could do better to your blood sugar by opting for something with whole grains. But in the end, a Big Mac is just a fatty meat on a bun. Not a big difference between that and tuna salad on white bread, but it sure looks worse because it's from Mickey D's.

Actually, McDonalds has some pretty healthy, surprisingly choices, if you don't count sodium.

Without dressing, the Premium Southwest Salad with Grilled Chicken is 320. Ditch the Tortilla strips and cheese and you're down to 250. That's without dressing, but like others have said, you can use half the packet or opt for the Lowfat Balsamic, which is 40.

The Premium Asian Salad with Grilled Chicken, without dressing, is 300.

The parfait (a nice breakfast treat) is 160.

Oh! Not healthy in any way, but their big@ss reduced fat ice cream cones (which are divine) are only 150 calories. AAAH!

I used to loathe McDonalds because of how bad the food is for you. But they've really made some steps in giving healthier options. Yeah, a BigMac will still clog your arteries, but they are an enterprising company. That they take healthier diets into account earns a kudos in my book.

Yes, you can loose weight even eating fast food. However, you will have a difficult time, in my opinion, sustaining the weight loss. Most fast food is empty calories, you get a lot of sodium, fat and refined carbs but very little nutritional value. So even if your stomach is stuffed, your body is malnourished. If your body is malnourished you will continue to crave food and it will be very difficult to resist those cravings. Sooner or later your calories will begin creeping up to take care of those cravings.

My advise, allow fast food occassionally for convenience or just because you like it and it's a treat but don't allow it more than about once a week.

Part of this journey is a lifestyle change and that means changing your relationship to food and how you think about nourishing your body. It's time to develop better, healthier eating habits, including doing a little cooking. I think you'll find that most of us on this site have begun to recognize the value in decreasing our reliance on fast food and overly processed foods.

Honestly, it doesn't take that much time. I spend 15 minutes a night putting together my lunch and snacks for the next day (if that much time). You can make a healthy dinner is 15 to 30 minutes.

I eat fast food occasionally and have found that if you're good and eat the healthy foods it's better for you. There are times, of course, when I'm traveling that I eat fast food, but I do a high intensity workout to balance it out. I can tell you, from personal experience, that getting too much fat in your diet will hinder your weight loss, even if you're under for your calories. That's the "my fault" of my weight gain.

Fast food is never good, however, I feel you shouldn't deprive yourself. Your body can be allowed such foods maybe once or twice a month. The rest, stay within your calories and try to make a healthy choice whenever possible. All this said, has anybody tried the new mcdonalds spicy chicken sandwich? Looks yummy!!!!
  • I used to like MacDonald's too. But I REALLY want to lose weight, so I had to make a choice.
I would not waste so many calories on only 1 BigMac. Don't you feel hungry right after you have eaten it? I noticed that alot with fast food, especially McD's. I would have a medium BigMac meal and 30 mins later I would be starving again. My boyfriend sometimes eats at MacD and I dont want to wait outside. So if we go to MacDonald's now I have 6 Chicken McNuggets with bbq sauce, thats all. No coke, no fries. They dont have that many calories (check MacD website) and if I eat them really slowly, then it makes me feel full. But since I joined here, I have only been to MacD once.
As others said before, a healthy sandwich doesnt take much time to prepare and you won't have a bad conscience after you ate it either
