My Mom is Addicted to Sugar!! :O

I'm worried about my mom quite a bit!
She can't even go a single day without going crazy with sugar.
She keeps bags of candy in our house, whip cream on her coffee, etc.
Although she is counting calories, her sugar addiction is holding her back from losing her last 20 pounds. If I remove all the sweets from our kitchen she gets cranky and irritable, and then all of a sudden eats tons of bananas for the sugar, even after a nice sized meal?
I want to help her reach a healthy weight for her age and height, but it's hard to help someone when they're a sugar addict. She doesn't have low blood sugar or diabetes, but she has just become crazy about sugar after she finishes her normal meals.
Any Advice? :(

  • Cut down gradually? There are books out there about sugar addiction.

Advice? Stop demonizing sugar. And let your mom worry about herself. She's a grown woman, if she wants to lose the last twenty lbs. she will.
  • Again? Really? Must be Let's-kill-sugar-Saturday.

Have you asked if she wants help? Maybe she is fine and doesn't want you removing sweets

If your mom hasn't asked for your help, don't judge or police her choices. She will lose the weight that she wants to lose; just because you want her to lose the additional weight doesn't mean its what your mom wants right now.

Also, sugar isn't a bad thing. It's all about CICO.

Maybe her mom was the lady in the other sugar addiction thread that got shut down.

Oh emily, no friends on your FL, four posts, and a thread fearing/demonizing sugar around the same time as that other sugar thread...I liked it when we could see how recently a person's account was made. It was easier to determine who was sincere that way.

QFT..... She is the only one that can make a change if she feels the need too.. You can only lead by example and let her live her life.... Best of Luck

If your mom didn't ask for your help in cutting down her sugar consumption, leave her alone.

If one of my adult children removed the sweets from my kitchen, my "sugar addiction" would be the least of their worries.

Your mom is a grown woman. If she wants to cut anything out, that's on her. You can't force her.
  • I have to agree that you shouldn't try to change someone without their willingness to participate. If she ASKED you for help, that's one thing. My mom is a very unhealthy eater cycling in and out of diets, and at this point I just support her when she says she is dieting, and try not to judge. When we choose places to eat, I suggest healthy places and order something healthy for myself. Telling her why or how to change has never worked and is unlikely to do anything but aggravate the other person. So "teach by example."

My grown children know better to come between me and my chocolate. And when I am raging PMS, they have offered to get me some chocolate lol

Damn. I'm putting whipped cream in my coffee next week... fo' sho'.

DH failed to stop and get me eggnog gelato, so instead I think I'll tuck into some M&M's while I turn my brain into jello trying to cram for the accuplacer.

Oh yeah, you need more whipped cream in your coffee, it's good.

    Maple syrup is good too.

I have homemade vanilla that will go into it. It will be quite good.

Maple syrup is a new one. I'll try that tomorrow. I have tried the butter thing... not so good. :noway:

Yeah. Leave her alone. She's a grown woman and sugar isn't evil.
