Fasting after a "cheat" day?

I talked to a friend today who has an all-out cheat once per month, than he fasts the following day and only has water and vegetable juice in order to spread the "cheat" day calories across two days to soften the blow a bit. Does anyone have any opinions about this tactic?

Why do you say that?0 -
Your body does not "remember" that you went nuts yesterday, it only knows that it is starving today. It messes with your blood sugar levels and overall metabolism0

Really unhealthy? Why do you think so? I actually was intrigued by the idea. ???0

I think as long as you do something constantly it should be fine. I would not totally go all out with the junk or cheat food but a little bit should be fine. I think everyone should have a cheat day every so often:)0 -

Not all bulimics binge and purge - many binge and fast.0 -

By that logic, then the THIRD day, your body wouldn't remember that it was "starving" the day prior, though, no? I am sure that it could possibly throw sugar levels off, but, shaking up the metabolism would be a good thing, wouldn't it?0 -
I dispise the word cheat with regards to food. I think that he is being a little ignorant in changing his eating habits so drastically from day to day. You can't spread your calories over 2 days.
That is like saying I am going to take a 5 hour shower today because I don't have time to shower tommorrow and I can spread the shower over 2 days. Every day starts new. Just my opinion.0 -
I dont think it's unhealthy at all-you don't go into starvation mode after a day-especially if u ate alot b4.0

Have a bad day, move on. Bi ge then fast is an ed0

It's not a bad thing.
I'd do it. It evens out.0 -

Binge/fast as an ED is something I've never heard of, so I admit I am/was ignorant on that topic so my mind never thought to go there. This person who I know who practices this is a healthy, well-balanced physically fit individual. At least outwardly. Many people fast once per month for health reasons, and sometimes they do eat more the day before the fast - so labeling everyone who practices this as ED seems unfair.
How about eat-stop-eat? That is also an eating style that incorporates bigger meals with periods of fasting in between. Is this an "ED" too?0 -

really does not have an impact on the metabolism. Fasting is actually very beneficial0 -
There is nothing wrong with even up to a 36 hour fast. It will not slow your metabolism at all, in fact for at least the first 24 hours it actually speeds up your metabolism, increases your insulin sensitivity, increases growth homone and the hormone glucagon. All these are beneficial for losing fat. On top of that your body doesn't run on a clock. It will keep digesting that big amount of food for at least 18 hours, maybe more if it has a lot of protein in it. The only negative I would see in this is fasting which is not an unhealthy activity turns into a punishment for over eating. Check out intermittent fasting through google sometime.0

C'mon! I don't see the difference, here??0 -

I would be interested in hearing what the benefits are of fasting, if you would be so kind to list some.0 -
Binging and fasting as a habit is probably not a healthy was to live-but when I have family get togethers I like to eat lots of goodies -I'm usually either not hungry the next day or a bit sick of food-I've never sated completely-I just eat a lot less. An Ed is a pyschological problem0

No its not always considered an ED. I do fasting about once a week sometimes. Refeed saturday the fast Sunday.0 -

There is really no need to do anything weird to lose weight. Fasting after a "cheat day" sounds pretty weird to me.0

The "smartest" thing to do is after a cheat / overeat / just didn't care day is to get back to your normal routine the next day. Everyone has heard that anything under 1200 and your body goes into survival mode.0

At the risk of annoying people, it's all bollocks. Oooh I ate some sugar so I must flagellate until I've purged my guilt. Exercise restraint on most days, go wild with the sugar on others. Make sure the good days are more numerous than the bad. There is no magic formula, a calculator wontmake you a size whatever.0

This guy may get away with it cause he is "healthy" but it would not be for everyone. I don't think that a "cheat" is bad but gorging one day and starving the next can create an unhealthy psyche and develop into an ED in folks with such a predisposition.0

I'd rather run for 2-3hrs than fast0

The answers here are sooooooo divided..... yet they all make sense to me!!! Uh oh!!! :laugh:0
