I'd like to start a little friendly competition if anybody is interested. I've been using the stair master at the gym lately for my cardio because I hate hate hate the treadmills and watching tv just makes me go slower. Is anybody interested?
Edit:
If interested to get going just start posting your most recent excursion.

That's why its a friendly competition. You're halfway there. Its a brutal machine. I have to cover the display with my towel or I'd never make it half way.0 -

I will have to try that, cause it takes all I have to make it the 30 minutes!!!0 -

Just keep it covered up and check on it every 5-10 minutes as you need to. I use a program to vary the speed so I keep an eye on things to make sure I don't get surprised by anything but some long songs on the ipod and not watching the clock makes it go by pretty fast.0 -

I always have my ipod, keeps out all the other distracting noises, like people on their cell phones and the crappy music the gym plays. I will be covering up the display next time and hopefully that helps, because I definitely watch the clock!!0 -
Just got home. It was quite the trip. It's always hard to start the stairmaster but tonight was by far my best yet.

That's awesome. Great work! I told you the towel would help. Honestly I felt good afterwards. I hate the first 15 minutes more than the last. It's so hard to motivate to get going and the first part drags by but once I'm going I just keep trucking along. I did take a few short 30 second breaks to stretch quick but I usually do anyways.0 -

Yeah the legs do tend to cramp up a bit. You are absolutely killing it, I couldn't imagine going for 60 minutes AND 250 floors, like I said AMAZING!!!!
How often do you do the stairmaster??0 -
Today, which took everything I had, but feel good now

That's awesome! You're doing better every time. I won't be back on the stairs until monday or tuesday because I'll be out biking this weekend. Have a great weekend.0

Missed the bike today because of some bad weather. Hit the gym with my fiance instead. Here's my numbers. I went for less time and higher intensity. It was way harder than I expected.

You both are doing a great job...I am still kind of afraid of the StairMaster. Every time I am at the gym I think perhaps today I will try it. So far I have not-so maybe this week is the week! Keep it up!!0

Just go for it. I actually thought the opposite and stayed away because it looked to easy and I was acting macho about it. It's an awesome workout. Last night during my 30 minute trip I was dying. I increased the intensity A LOT. My fiance was on the treadmill behind me and every time I had to take a 30 second break she had to look over and smile which pushed me on.
I started off slowly. Just doing about 10-15 minutes, then increased intensity by either speeding it up or carrying a weight. Carrying a weight creates a two fold problem. First, you can't hold the rails, which could be considered unsafe, but it also doesn't allow you to use your hands to take any weight off your legs. The second thing it does is force your body to use more muscles. This will create some core activity as you'll be leaning more in different directions.0 -

Adding weights, are you crazy!!!! LOL, maybe one day, but that will be a long time from now Um and if I didn't hold on to the rails I would probably break something, I stand straight up the whole time though, unlike some people I see leaning over!!
@Jules, it is hard but an amazing workout, like he said start off slow like 10-15 minutes and go from there0 -

Thanks! Our stairmaster goes from level 1-20. Last week when I did an hour it was on level 8. Last night when I did 30 minutes I went up to level 11. It was way way way faster than I expected. I was sweating more on that than I do for an hour trip on level 8.0 -

I added the weights to get the extra core exercise. It was less about cardio and more about body control. It's very difficult with out the rails and takes a lot more focus. It was fun but I haven't done it for quite awhile.0 -

Do you wear a HRM?? I use one everyday, on the days I do the elliptical I burn more calories than the days I do the stairmaster. The strange thing is I feel like the stairmaster kicks my butt a lot harder than the elliptical?? Just seems strange?!?! Hope you are having a good week0

I don't wear a HRM but I wish I had one. I've been trying to convince myself to spend a few buck on one lately but haven't been able to. I try to take the calorie counters with a grain of salt. I did see much higher numbers on the treadmill at full incline for an hour vs the stairmaster for an hour. However, my drenched shirt and sore muscles tell me the stairmaster was just as good if not better in the big picture.0 -

My thoughts exactly!!!!0 -
I'll join in after I do the stairs again! I did 45 min on Monday, but I don't recall the # flights. I know it was over 100, though.
I do wear a HRM, and I definitely burn more on the stairs than elliptical. Treadmill it varies, depending on if I'm walking or running and incline. I haven't tried adding weights, but I usually don't hold on unless I'm getting a drink. I do turn around sometimes just for something different - the machine I use just has pedals, not actual revolving stairs. I'd never even thought to turn around until I saw a guy doing it last year!
Oh, and I definitely always cover up the display with a towel, no matter what machine I'm on! Makes it go SO much faster for me, as I'm not looking at the display every 20 seconds! lol0 -

Welcome to the challenge. Be careful going backwards. I've tried it a few times and while it is impressive and probably changes your muscle groups a little but there is a higher chance of getting hurt by falling backwards onto the machine. Looking forward to your first post.0 -

Don't feel bad. If it weren't for bad days we wouldn't have good days. Just use it as motivation to push harder next time. You're doing great!0 -
Do you do the stairmaster or a treadclimber? I would like to join as I use the treadclimber at least once a week but I hate the stairmaster. I know crazy.0
