Carbs aren't evil!!!

Many of my friends are also trying to lose weight at the moment; some have done wonderfully on a program called Dr. Poon. They have tried many many times to get me to join with them but it's just not my cup of tea. I wanted to do something this time that I can envision doing for the rest of my life, in other words eat normal healthy food and not give up anything.
The diet they are on is based on a very low carb lifestyle and while yes I can see they are losing weight, you know what? So am I and I haven't given up anything!
I watched my friends son this weekend and when she came to pick him up I was putting some groceries away and she saw my 12 grain bread and my thin bagels she was like" WOW DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY CARBS ARE IN THOSE?" I explained that I’m not doing a low carb diet and am counting calories and doing portion control, she was telling me that I should give them up to lose the weight then slowly add them back in. ummmmmm why would I get rid of carbs when I’m losing while eating them? Why when a balanced diet and exercise are working for me, would you try and get me onto some other fad diet?
She's lost 10lbs, I've lost 27lbs, do I really need her telling me the "right" way to lose weight?

Carbs aren't evil. But there are a handful of items that are carbs that are terrible for your health, regardless of their calorie or carb level.....but some people's bodies react negatively to the carbs, more than just weight gain. It affects mental health and an overall well-being, in addition to weight. So some people have realized this and dramatically reduce their carbs for a better quality of life.0

You go girl! I'm trying to do it right this time too! I ahve done the low carb diet and lost weight, and then gained it all back. I can't keep out carbs.... i love them too much! I am looking for a lifestyle change.... not a diet. This way seems to be doing better for e also because I am not giving anything up. Keep going, your doing great!!!!0

I think it's crazy that people do all of these diets where you can't eat a food that you should be eating - whole grains... really I'm pretty sure that's not how we all got overweight! Moderation and portion control are the most important things. They may lose weight this way but they are way more likely to put it back on.0 -
Carbs are not the enemy...it's a a matter of portion control, choosing good carbs, and when you are eating it. I still eat carbs but dropping the weight.
There will always be extremes of eating, diets, and exercise. You just have to find what works for you, your family, and your lifestyle.0 -
Carbs aren't evil, no. But, for some of us, eating very many of them, or getting them from grains and sugar is very unhealthy.0

I've done low carb a few times and I don't believe its healthy for you. I had all sorts of problems when I was on it. I also read a study that compared low calorie to low carb and over a period of a year the people on low calorie lost more weight. I agree with you!0

I'm sick of people looking down their noses at calorie counting and portion control just because it isn't the "newest thing". It WORKS for me ... so butt out! "Oh no, you should do THIS" they say. No, I'm going to keep doing what I'm doing because it's working, thanks.
(Besides, I tried the low carb diet a few years ago. Sure, I lost 15 lbs right off the bat, but also never had any energy, was miserable all the time and then gained 25 lbs back because I fell off the wagon. Low Carb is ridiculously hard to maintain, and who wants to live like that?)

Some people feel that they need to switch up their diet and change how their bodies process food. I would rather eat a diet fueled by quality proteins and low glycemic carbs then fueled by simple sugars that are only going to make me hungry and hour later. If bagels work for you then I applaud your efforts, but for some people it just won't cut it.0

You're right. Carbs aren't evil. Yes, carbs are one of the easiest things to overeat; however, if we watch our calorie intake and get plenty of protein and enough good fat, high-quality carbs absolutely have their place. (Besides... a lot of ultra low-carb dieters smell like ammonia [aka "cat pee"] when they sweat. And who wants that??!)0

I completely agree. I don't want to do something that I can't stick with for the rest of my life. I KNOW I can't avoid carbs forever -- so why do it, lose weight and then gain it back? I know eliminating carbs from my life won't be something I can stick with, so I won't do it. I will learn to eat better and in moderation. I know that *I* can live with that forever.
I don't tell other people what they should eat and it drives me NUTS when people do it to me. You do what works for you and I'll do what works for me. Let's avoid criticizing one another, ya know?0 -

Hit the nail on the head. Eating 'whole grains' is not good for everyone. Nor is it bad for everyone. You do what works for you, what is healthy and strengthens your body.
I would never attempt to dictate what someone else puts in their body (unless its my child and they are eating crap ) We eventually find out what works for us. :drinker:0 -

Carbs are incredibly difficult for some of us to cut back on. However, there is evidence that too many processed carbs and sugars are indeed bad for you and do cause weight gain. That said, I'm a carb lover and a sugar lover. I know I consume too many of these but it would be unrealistic for me to think I could some day be happy on a diet of 30g of carbs a day. If you really don't like what you're eating then how can you stick to it? I LOVE fruit. I eat at least two servings of fruit a day... a apple and banana total like 50g of carbs! I know I need to switch something up in my diet so I'm attempting to lower my intake and have found very supporting individuals on MFP that have helped me. Let me also state that I am of course on this site to watch my calorie intake and portion control as well. I found that keeping my carbs around 100 grams a day has helped me to recently get out of a two month plateau. I still enjoy fruit, but I limit the consumption of the carbs. All of our bodies do not metabolize nutrients the same way.0 -
Good for you! If something works for you, then by all means continue doing it. I have not given anything up either, I just eat in better portion sizes. I am a firm believer that if you cut everything bad out of your diet, then you will fall off the bandwagon hard and fast.

I've never been able to sustain a low carb diet for more than a handful of days because I do a lot of hard, heavy exercise. Not having at least a reasonable amount of carbs in my system made me crash and burn, unable to do the exercise and ultimately lose less weight than I do by simple calorie control. I think it's one of those things that works much better when you're focussing more on diet than exercise.0

Yeah, but before sites like this calorie counting used to be very difficult and people would fail, so it got a bad rep. This site and a digital scale has allowed me to finally succeed with ease.0 -
Carb's aren't evil. Too many of them and the wrong kinds are evil! just like with anything else. Carbs may not be evil to you, but what about my friends son who has cancer that is on a gluten free diet, I guarantee he considers some carbs evil!!!
Glad the way you are doing it is working for you, but respect that not everything works for everybody. I guarantee that alot of people that have carb sensitivities wish they could eat more carbs without gaining weight so easily. I know I wish i could.0 -
Some people seem to be missing the BIG part of my OP that said why would she bug me to eat low carb when eating carbs hasn't hurt my weight loss at all. I didn't push my way on her and that's what I had aproblem with.
I was calling the particular diet my friends are on a fad diet not the whole low carb life style. She has no intention of living that way as a lifestyle she's doing it to lose weight and then plans on adding them back into her diet.0
