Should you work out if you're sleep deprived?

If you had the choice between going to the gym and having a nap because you didn't have enough sleep the night before what would you do?

    Nap. Sleep deprivation and I don't do well - I would have a rotten workout and it'd effect the next day as well.

    With the job I have dealing with a lot of cash in and out, sleep is more important for me. I want by brain fully functional dealing with customers and their issues and their money. I would take the nap although it would probably be a short one.

    My co-worker has a sleep disorder which means she is in a perpetual state of sleep deprivation. Her REM sleep is disturbed. She finds intense physical activity about the only thing that helps her mind rest.

    I'd be careful with loose weights if I were sleep deprived.

    My husband was doing an 80k Strava challenge and woke up during a run! He likened it to falling asleep at the wheel. Maybe a bit safer in the gym lol.

    In the immortal words of my younger brother "You can sleep when you're dead".

    But really, one night of bad sleep should not be leave you in sleep deprivation. Tired maybe, lazy maybe. Deprived, no.

    I would work out and make sure I got to bed early tonight.

    Sleep deprivation is a constant for me so I make myself workout. However, that is just a result of working 3rd shift and having a toddler... if you aren't in a situation where you lack good sleep often, like mine, then one day off from the gym won't hurt.
  • It depends on YOU. If the lack of sleep will cause you to binge, be anxious, or some other negative behavior than the nap is the way to go. If you can push through, then it might help clear your mind and calm your sprit. Any chance of getting to do both.....work it out and then go home and rest??

    I've been picking sleep over getting up early for my workouts. Been averaging 4-5 hours a night so I'm in favoring of sleeping in or napping.

    I'd go to the gym, and then nap afterwards. Boom. Best of both worlds.

    I feel it at the gym if I have even one night of short or disrupted sleep. Some people can do well on not much sleep but I'm not one of them, even as I get older. I'm in favor of the nap myself.:) And then going back to the gym!

    It all depends upon what "not enough sleep" means for me. If I have a night where I miss 2-3 hours of sleep, I'm tired, but still go to the gym. If I have a night where we are up all night at work and I am lucky if I get 3-4 hours of very interrupted sleep, then I go for the nap. At that point I am just too tired to be able to lift safely.

    If it's just one night, go work out. It'll boost your energy for the rest of the day. If you're in a constant state of sleep deprivation and have a chance for a nap, take the nap.

    This, if it's true for you as it usually is for me. Napping also tends to mess me up.

    If I'm pretty sleep deprived, though, I'll choose sleeping in the morning (if I can) over a particular workout, which I've generally found to pay off with a lot more energy when I worked out the next day.

    Depends on how badly. For me, one true route to binging is if I get too exhausted, so I'd tend to vote nap, or at least moderate exercise rather than vigorous. I think this is a "know thyself!" situation.

    Well I'm incapable of napping, which SUCKS btw, but say I had a bad night's sleep and could get up with the alarm or reset it for an hour later...if I felt tired I would reset the alarm. When I'm tired I just eat constantly, also I'm pissy and snippy and not sharp like I need to be. I'm just not a good tired person.

    I don't exercise hard when I'm not well nourished and rested. It leads to panic attacks.

    I'd go anyway. I'm always sleep deprived. If I used that as an excuse, I'd never do anything. Take a nap later.

    My body and I rarely agree on what is "enough" sleep. I function with a constant sense of fatigue that never leaves thanks to the MS. So unless my body is actually giving me signals like slurred words, loss of balance, and headaches I just keep with the original plan and ignore it.

    A couple nights of not enough sleep, I say go workout. But if you find yourself getting into a state of chronic sleep deprivation from many nights in a row of too little sleep, you run the risk of running your body down and lowering your immune system and getting sick.

    Depends on how tired I am.

    If a Stay Awake (200mg caffeine pill) will wake me up, then I take one..wait about 1hr and then workout.

    If however, I'm past the point of caffeine waking me up, then it's nap time. At this point, I'm more likely to injure myself if I workout.

    In my case sleep deprivation and working out go hand in hand. If I get enough sleep, I don't have time to work out.
