Anxiety over eating

When I eat these days, I think I experience anxiety. My heat starts beating irregularly, and I feel like I'm going to vomit. Even the thought of eating makes my heart start to skip beats. Has anyone else experienced this, and what did you do to overcome it?

Have you talked to a doctor or counselor about this?

You may want to speak to a professional about that, as it's not a healthy behavior

I would talk to a doctor because this sounds like it could become an eating disorder if you try to ignore it.

I agree with everyone else who has posted. It is time to see a doctor or some other type of specialist. This is not healthy.

I have that problem, but I've had it since I was a toddler. I suffer from SED (selective eating disorder) which is also known as ARFID (avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder). I even have panic when people are near me eating foods I have phobias of.
  • I'm going to the doctor soon. I'll try to talk about this.

Mornings are definitely better, but after that I can't seem to eat anything, even healthy stuff.

I experienced this as well... I had to stop counting my calories and weighing my food. I stopped using MFP to count calories in March, and it was one of the things that helped me to overcome my anxiety with eating. The thought of going back to weighing everything before it goes into my mouth gives me anxiety, and I am so grateful I stopped.

I've been able to maintain a 118 pound weight loss for a couple years now. I've started to actually enjoy food again and some days I actually have no anxiety over what I eat.. but trust me, it's a long journey and you have to seek some support and be patient with yourself.

for me it was the sensation of food settling in my stomach that made me anxious, but i got over that by eating smaller amounts more slowly. not sure if this helps you at all.
  • Indigoflowers, what kind of support did you seek? (If you don't mind me asking...)

I've tried to stop counting calories, and also don't weigh myself anymore, but every once in a while, I have to check how many calories I'm eating, because I'm freaking out that it's way too much. But usually it's around 6-800.

bulbadoof, I do eat really slowly! And I don't think I eat a lot at once. But the sensation of being sickly full and wanting to throw up lasts for hours and hours after I eat. It feels like the food doesn't move out of my stomach. Is that what you were feeling?

    I hope that isn't 6-800 calories a day. That really isn't enough.

This is the sort of thing I work with as a psychotherapist. Definitely find someone who you can talk to and work through it before it gets too bad.

As others have said, please seek help. The above link gives you some good resources. You can also talk to your doctor or seek a help center. Depending on where you live there should be some sort of low cost or free option to get some sort of help.

    Best of luck!
  • I think I've found a way to go to a psychologist. I just hate my body, and am so, so fat! I want it all to go away! I don't feel like I can eat when my body is like a fat balloon and looks so disgusting. But I can't figure out how to lose enough weight!

Yes, it is because you are thinking much about it without having any solution. You should go to a doctor and consult with him. It will help you also to change your mind about foods and your digestion.

Tell him or her this. You have an eating disorder, and they are going to be the only one who can help you figure out a way to recover.

What they all said. Its really important you push through and get professional help as your image of your own body and relationship with food sound very distorted.
  • I'm afraid a doctor is going to keep me from losing more weight, not because it would be dangerous, but if I tell him my thoughts. I need to lose more weight, and I could still do that without being in the underweight category. I just need help to lose before I try to address the thoughts.

You need to address the thoughts you are having before you do anything else. Say everything you are saying to us to your doctor.
  • I went to the doctor. He ordered a bunch of tests.

Is there any way I could just have a really slow metabolism? I'm afraid if I eat more, I'll gain a bunch of weight!! I feel sick if I eat more. I ate a ton today, and feel so sick.
