Stevia causing carb cravings/hunger?

Has anyone else noticed this? I occasionally get intense cravings/hunger and I've started tracking when it happens, and it seems to happen on days when I have more stevia in the raw than usual. I'm starting to wonder if it could be linked?

I don't really eat stevia or sweeteners. But there was a paper about rats over-eating when given a 0-calorie drink compared to ones given a sugary calorie drink. I totally do not remember the paper title though. So if there's any transfer of this towards humans, then moral of the story = don't eat 0-calorie food items.

I did read something along the same line of thought. Got some stevia in some whey one time and I did not like the taste I remember.

Just my experience, but I use liquid stevia in my tea every day and thats the only sweetener I use. I dont have carb craving when using it.

I actually lied, I have Truvia but have only used it a handful of times. I have not noted whether it's made me hungrier than normal when using, but it does have a distinct flavour and can ruin the overall flavour if over-used. I think they are related sweeteners?

Actually you were correct all alone it seems.:) The link below does mention side effects.

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truvia

  • "Truvia" and or "Stevia in the Raw" are neither pure Stevia products and are mainly dextrose which is just another common sweetner that's been used forever. It is sad how they can brand and name things now. Try online or your local health food store to find some real Stevia which, as far as my minimal weekly use, has not caused anything you describe. You can check my diary for my brand- check Saturday.

so that is why they lost the lawsuit. Thanks

Yup!! I experience this all the time.... if Jasper above is right and this "stevia in the raw" is just dextrose, then that is why.... I do experience cravings when i have pure stevia but definitley not as much as when i have other common sweetners. i read a study once (no idea where from - sorry, but which explained why sweetner does this in a super straightforward, almost obvious way!!!

When you have sweetner, your tastebuds tell your brain that "oop, shes eating sugar.... best prepare the enzymes in her tum to recieve this sugary sweet goodness".... however, when no sugar arrives, just sweetner (which is of a totally different chemical composition) you still have those sugar digesting enzymes ready in your tummy.... so cravings ensue.... I dont know how scientifically proven this is, but it seems pretty solid common sense to me?!
