Activity trackers v GPS watch

Hi all
I'm a real quandary about what device to buy. I've been waiting on the fitbit charge hr to be released In uk. My typical workout has been treadmill and cross trainer, and in January I'm having a home gym built with cardio equipment plus punch bag and weights bench. and I thought the fitbit was a perfect tracker for calorie burn. However I've recently started running on the road and really want a gps device to track my times and monitor improvement. I don't want multiple devices if I can help it, but the fitbit charge hr doesn't have GPS, and the surge looks too big to wear 24x7. The Microsoft band looks decent, but no idea if it's being released in the uk. My perfect device would have hr monitor (so I get a view of calorie burn when weight lifting), gps and be pretty small so I could wear it day and night....
Does anything exist and if so can anyone give me advice on the best solutions open to me. I got. A voucher from Santa to buy whatever tracker I want come the New Year and at present I'm lost...

Any suggestions welcome.

Cheers all

Luke

Forerunner 15 sounds like the best bet; GPS, HRM and pedometer.

Note that an HRM derived calorie expenditure figure for resistance training is meaningless.

Notwithstanding that, I'd suggest the reviews and comparison tables on dcrainmaker.com

Useful.. Thx, interesting to realise they aren't much cop for resistance training.. Thinking might just go fitbit surge and see how I get on wearing it 24x7
    Cheers

The FR15 will work with an HRM when you're running and that becomes useful.

I use a 310XT for running and cycling, so being able to look at how my HR reacts to the session becomes meaningful.

just used Runkeeper on my iphone and worked an absolute treat.. I think the Surge HR coupled with Runkeeper will give me exactly what Im after. thanks for taking the time to reply.
  • I have a garmin forerunner 305 that I bought when I was training for the half- marathon. It monitors HR but I'm trying to figure out if this will work indoors without a GPS signal - does anyone know?

Should do, although you'll need a footpod for it to measure distance on a dreadmill.

The Polar FT7 will work directly with Runkeeper.
