Need advice...

I am embarking on my fitness journey, and need advice on the best workout DVD to fit my needs. I am 5'2", 169 lbs., and wear a size 12. I don't have weight issues with my stomach or breasts thanks to a tummy tuck and breast lift I had after the birth of my 6th child 9 years ago. My major issues are with my hips, thighs, legs, back, and arms. I would like recommendations for the best workout DVD to target those areas. This is my first serious attempt to finally get healthy and in shape. My goal is to reach 130 lbs., and I'd like to meet my goal by May or June. Any advice/recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You can't target where fat will come off from. It will leave your body all over. Additionally, setting target dates for weight loss often leads to failure. Just set your goal to a pound a week and go from there.0

Thank you for the advice. I guess I stated those areas simply because those are the areas that need to be toned the most. In other words, I know some workouts target specific areas. I don't necessarily need a workout DVD that targets belly fat, but rather, one that focuses more on my problem areas.0

This girl knows what she is talking about. Focus on being healthy, if you want to lose fat then hit the cardio hard. If you goal is to lose 50lbs by June then you really have your work cut out for you, I originally dedicated 1 Year to lose 90 Lbs and now that I am close to my goal have increased to 100lbs, but I will slow it down to 1lb a week and concentrate on weight training once I hit 180. It takes a lot of dedication and willpower, you need to be dedicated to doing this for the long term and then continuing with the lifestyle after you get to your goal.

People often think their they have un-toned muscle, when it's almost always just fat. Your muscles are nice and toned already. They are just hidden by surface fat.
Unfortunately, you can't target fat loss. It is burned off as part of your general whole body metabolism, and where it comes off first and last is based mostly on genetics.
Your best bet is to eat at a calorie deficit, and do your favorite cardio training to increase the deficit. That can be running, biking, or a DVD, or a million other things - it doesn't matter too much what you do, as long as it raises your heart rate.
You should also do some strength training to preserve most of the muscle you already have. If you're working out at home, check out the books "Body By You" or "You Are Your Own Gym" for a no-equipment strength program. If you have access to a gym, beginner barbell routines are the simplest strength programs.0 -
I am using Leslie Sansone, Zumba Fitness, and Shaun T Rockin Body DVDs and we are also doing some Richard Simmons at my exercise class. I find that all of them give me a good workout, some workouts on each DVD are tougher than others. Try a few different ones and see. But stick with them, they get easier once you get in a routine of doing them a few times a week. Good luck!
By the way, I am almost the same height as you and started at a bit lower weight but my biggest challenge really was the exercise. I just wasn't getting enough. I am enjoying these workouts.0 -
Wow Derek! Your weight loss accomplishments are impressive. Congratulations! I am definitely committed to making a major lifestyle change. I set that goal simply to have a goal, but am more than willing to change it based on the advice of people, like yourself, who have actually done it. Thanks for your input!0
