I cant have large bags of chips in the house (small ones are fine)
I cant have a whole cake in the house (a piece from the grocery store is fine)
I hope one day I can just eat in moderation but this Christmas was a real wakeup call.
For some reason it is too much temptation for me to handle, don't know why, I guess I am just what you call greedy. Are ya like this or is it just me? WIth certain foods I definitely set myself up for failure if I try moderation.

I keep all bags of chips and boxes of crackers out of the house for just that reason. You're definitely not alone!

you are NOT alone ...... I either don't buy some foods at all (really sugary treats) ..... or allow myself to have others at certain times ..... cheesy popcorn during football games comes to mind B)

I couldn't drink mountain dew in moderation. I gave it up cold turkey afew years back. It was hard at first, it was hard for awhile actually. Now I pass it and I don't even think about it. I could buy it for my brother who drinks it and keep it in our house, and I wouldn't drink it. But in place of that I've developed an affinity for diet coke (only from McDonald's, I know it's weird I prefer that to the canned variety even..) I guess I just replaced one addiction with something else. But I'm pretty happy that I was able to give dew up, I could drink a 2 liter a day I swear.

We do keep chips and cookies in the house (for my dad) and my self control isn't the greatest. I try to just keep them out of sight and out of mind but he likes to leave them all over the house LOL. Just takes time I guess to build up the restraint, but for some things, like the dew, I literally had to keep them out of the house. Everyone may feel differently, but I'm sure you're not alone :)

Definitely bags of chips. Just tonight my dad brought a bag over for New Year's and I can't keep myself away. =( I've had way more than I should.

Yup. Brownies and chocolate chip cookies. Until I can control myself, they don't enter my domain.

I discovered a couple weeks ago I can't do pretzels. Chocolate, ice cream, those are fine and I can eat them almost every night. But give me a bag of pretzels and I'll forget to weigh them and eat handful after handful.

  • Oreos cannot enter my house. I'm embarrassed to admit how many Oreos I have eaten in a single sitting.

I have mixed feelings about it. I've noticed that if I buy something that I haven't had for a while, I will eat way more than I should. But if I keep myself supplied, I can handle moderation. I try to keep some of the less healthy foods around the house, because I will eat too much of something else, if I can't satisfy a craving.

It used to be ice cream. For some reason, I don't binge on the vegan versions. Win win.

thanks for the replies. It is what it is and there are some foods I cant eat in moderation so I don't have them at my house, maybe someday. Hard lesson to learn over Christmas. I was maintaining my weight and guess I got complacent.

Doritos. Sour Cream and Cheddar ruffles. Cheesecake. And chocolate bars. Also, any form of icecream that isnt preproportioned.

I've found that if i can get these items in small quantities or prepacked portions it isnt AS bad. But, i may just eat 6 snack bags of doritos. =/

I am the same way with chips, I love the baked lays cheddar and sour cream the most. If I buy them I eat the whole bag within a day. Any homemade baked sweets are also hard for me to resist.

I have a hard time controlling myself around cake batter / cookie dough. I've gotten a lot better with moderation overall though.

I think there is no such thing as a food you cannot eat in moderation; the issue is how we view moderation.

Most people hear moderation and think of it as "only eating one portion size of said food." Which is true, you can do moderation by portion size, and for some people, that works. There are people who can have one serving of chocolate every day and be perfect content.

However, moderation can also be about frequency. If there's a food that you know you are going to overeat, you can enjoy it in moderation by moderating the frequency in which you have the food. For example, I know that if I have a bag of trail mix with the dried cranberries and dark chocolate, that whole bag is going down. I'm not even going to apologize for it. So I only have that on rare occasions. It's still moderation because I am limiting how much of that food I have in my diet (in the big picture sense) and am not eliminating the food from my diet.

I know this viewpoint is a bit of semantics, but I find for the mental aspect of weight loss, it can be very empowering to view it in the sense of frequency rather than as a "I can't have this." It also eliminates the tendency to focus on something I "can't" have, not that human beings ever do stuff like that.

Salt and Vinegar pringles! I've actually hidden them at my boyfriends house so they are out of sight, my mouths watering just at the thought of them lol. I know tomorrow once I've worked out I'll have a few extra calories so will be able to have a few and satisfy my craving.
  • Chips/crackers -- anything salty are my trigger foods...So, I also can't eat just a few if there is a bag in the house....At least I'm aware of this type of behavior -- it's bad though if I go to a party and try to eat just a few....Can't stop!!! Ha.

peanut butter. Okay, it's in the house because my significant other can have a tablespoon on toast... and he stops there. I would have a tablespoon sans toast... and then switch the tablespoon out for an ice cream scoop! I can pass by the peanut butter very easily as it has been 18 months for me... just afraid of what would happen if I indulge myself. I even went so far as to buy prepackaged individual servings of peanut butter but couldn't bring myself to have it.

Also peanut butter! Was scooping it straight out of the jar and gobbling it down yesterday :( Thankfully I stopped before I made too much of a dent in my allotted calories for the day. Guess I'm back to staying away from it again, since I still can't control myself. Sigh.

Also tortilla chips (Chipotle's chips mmmhmm) esp with guac. I make myself get the kids' size chips when I have them (very rarely).

Refined carbs, man. Especially salty ones. I know I'm heading for a downward spiral when I buy pasta, rice, potato chips, fancy breads, etc., because I simply can't practice moderation with these things.

Baked goods, pretty much. Chocolate and ice cream also depending on what time of the month it is.

Oreos, Chips Ahoy, and Halloween/Christmas small size chocolate bars.

It's crazy though because it's JUST those. I can bake better quality cookies, scones, pie, and eat it moderately. My husband and I regularly keep big bars of nice quality dark chocolate (especially with toffee, caramel, etc) in the pantry and share them spaced out over a week. But if I had a little bag of Snickers fun size they would be GONE in a day.
