Diet vs Exercise

So obviously we all know weight loss is a true combination of diet and exercise.
But I read that it is more a 70/30 split than a 50/50 split. Anyone have any opinions on this? Or do you think it varies from person to person?

All the exercise in the world can't save you from terrible eating. Eat right and you only need 30 min of exercise 5 days a week. Add me if you need a friend!0

You lose weight in the kitchen
Exercise gives you the right mindset and more calories but you can lose weight without it
Weights help maintain LBM which results in easier maintenance but you can lose weight with out it
It's all about the food you shovel in, you can't out-exercise a bad diet0 -
I don't know what 50/50 or 70/30 or 90/10 means, but in any case, I don't disagree with any of the advice. Plainly you can't lose weight without controlling calories in and you can lose weight without controlling calories out. But it is equally true that burning 250 more calories is just as valuable as eating 250 less. And for many people the marginal cost of the calories out is much lower than the calories in. In other words, if you are looking to drop another 1/2 lb week, you may find it preferable to exercise an additional 30 minutes/day than to drop from 1600 to 1350 calories0

You get fit in the gym and lose weight in the kitchen!!!0

Weight loss is about diet.
Exercise is about fitness.
2 different concepts, mostly unrelated. You can get fitter without losing weight, and you can lose weight without getting fitter. Keep them separate in your mind, and imo you will be more successful.0 -
I just wondered because I find it easier to eat less/healthier than I do to motivate myself to go to the gym.
I can go to the gym 2-3 times a week but I will never be one of these people who can go to the gym 5-7 times a week.0 -

You don't need to go to the gym more than 2-3 times per week.0 -

Very Good point and to illustrate that, wife started a juice reboot boxing day and has lost 5lbs, I started a fitness/smoothie/healthy eating plan and have taken and moved inches around. Both happy tho

Its much easier to gain calories than burn them. Eating clean means you don't need to exercise as much as someone who's diet is all over the place.0

I like what Dr. Yoni Freedhoff says on this: You can't outrun your fork.
It takes a lot more effort to burn off calories than it does to reel yourself in in the kitchen. I can cross-country ski for an hour and more than blow what I burned in 10 minutes with a slice of pecan pie. (Not to say I don't eat the occasional slice of pecan pie!)0 -

Love this! So true.0 -
Its about 80/20, but varies between individuals.
Your focus should be on diet because its easier to control that aspect of calorie consumption, than it is to have the same effect through exercise.
Its all too popular on these forums to dismiss the fact that exercise burns calories. If you do enough it can be a substantial help with weight loss. It also has other fitness and muscle retention benefits.0 -

IMHO, weight loss varies from person to person. I've always been a fairly decent eater, but I couldn't change my body composition without exercise. I think if a person has really bad eating habits, then definitely diet plays a bigger part. I didn't start seeing the pounds really come off until I began exercising.0
