The life and lies of a sour apple

Hi,

So I'm not exactly new to mfp, I started using it a year ago but only for a couple of weeks then forgot about it. But I've never wandered through the community pages before, so I feel like I've just discovered a possible lifechanger.

I am 5'6, and a bit over 187lbs. My goal for this year is to get to 140lbs. I'm not sure if it's a reasonable goal, but at least it's something.

I love food, I eat a lot and I've never cared about my weight, but I was always under 155lbs until I started taking some meds, and side effect was weight gain. I started counting calories but gaining weight never stopped, I went on a 1200cal diet, but still nothing. I started working out, and that helped in stopping the gain (and shape my body yay), but didn't lose any weight at all. After a bit of experimenting with diets and so I managed to lose 10lbs, but then I lost motivation and gained it all back again.

So here I am, doing another attempt at healthy eating and calorie counting, mfp suggested 1400cal/day and that sounds just perfect, I won't starve :D (Actually it suggested 1500cal/day but I will probably underestimate the amount of calories I'm consuming so gave myself 100cal margin).

Sorry for the long post, I just needed to get it all out. Wish me luck, I'll probably be posting here a lot because I need a lot of advice.

  • Hello Sour,

First, welcome to the forums, this is a great place to use as motivation or even support. There are a number of people who are well educated and others who are not very educated but believe they are.

I know that MFP tends to be a bit on the lower side of the cals and when you have to intake them. I am glad to hear that you are doing well, but I know for me 1800 is very hard to keep with. Eating less does not equate to losing weight, it just means your body is not getting everything it needs.

I don't visit here often, but when I do I see a lot of posts similar to yours about eating less. It's not a diet you need, it's a lifestyle change, you need to get out there and do more things, start with changing what you eat and changing up the whole "if I eat less than i'll lose more" you may, but it will not be the healthy way about doing things. I am thinking that you should abandon that thinking and start to read more.

I used to think exactly like you did, then I kind of adjusted or switched things up. I hope this helps. Chat me anytime.

    Thanks,
    SSP.

Thank you so much. I really do believe in what you're saying, the only diet that actually worked for me and I intend to follow again is to eat a bit of everything, more veggies and less junk, never starve. But I think counting calories may help me stay on track.
The thing about eating less probably comes from the fact that I ate a whole pizza today  and I do that more than occasionally.
