So I've been wanting to try overnight oats for months now. I see the pictures posted on Pinterest, IG etc... they look so pretty and yummy. Simple and a complete breakfast. Well I HATED THEM. So disappointed. This is what I added:

½ cup Raw Oats
½ cup Plain Yogurt
¾ cup Unsweetened Almond milk
½ tsp. Ground Cinnamon
1 oz. Fresh Raspberries
1 oz. Fresh Blueberries

I didn’t like anything about it. Texture or flavor. Any suggestions? I hate to dismiss them but I am more of an egg whites, turkey bacon veggie eater.
Well, I tired. Next!  Happy Tuesday morning all.

Welcome!

That doesn't sound good to me either.

what i do is the following:

2.00 cup dry (48g), Old Fashioned Rolled Oats
0.25 cup ,1 oz, 30 g, Almonds Slivered Blanched Almonds (chopped)
6.00 tablespoons, PB2 Peanut Butter, Powdered
    1.50 cup, Almond Milk Light
8.00 Rounded Scoop (30.4g), Gold Standard Whey Protein Extreme Milk Chocolate
2.00 TBSP, Milk Chocolate Chips (chopped)

I add all the dry ingredients and then slowly add the almond milk in until it comes together.

Then i put it in a baking dish lined with plastic wrap. By morning it's thick and similar to those no-bake chocolate oatmeal cookies.

Add less milk and it will be even thicker and can be cut into bars.

either way it's not soupy, goopy, or anything. it's chocolate-peanutbuttery goodness.

Thanks! That sounds more up my alley.
I’ll give it another try before I write them off. Thanks for the input!

Honestly, I'd rather just take the time to cook them.

I prefer steel cut oats, thicker and more texture. I make a big pot once a week and split it up and refrigerate. Then reheat in microwave then you could add whatever.

My version of overnight oats is heating up my steal cut oats with raisins the night before then sticking them in the fridge to reheat in the morning. I just prepare it when I prepare our lunches for the next day. I'm guessing you don't cook them? Raw oats don't sound appealing at all to me.

If done properly, they aren't raw. They also arent soft or mushy like oatmeal.

They end up as a soft but firm texture similar to an oatmeal cookie.

If they aren't cooked they're by definition raw. I can see how they might appeal to someone who doesn't like old fashioned oatmeal. In my case it's an old favorite.

Yet they are nothing like eating raw oatmeal. They absorb liquid and are softened.

Either way, i like both. But overnight oats if done properly are delicious.

I thought I was the only person who couldn't stand overnight oats, lol.
Now I soak oats overnight in plenty of water (or milk, or whatever you use), then in the morning the oats are lovely and soft and they just need nuking and topping how you like.

my friend made some and it came out very much like oatmeal soup- so I have mixed feelings. making it just seems so much easier.

I love my overnight oats! The way I make mine the texture is like a heavy greek yogurt.

    1/2 cup minute oatmeal
    1 L tub regular yogurt
4 tablespoons Holy Crap cereal (mostly hemp hearts and chia seeds)
    couple handfuls of frozen blueberries.

This makes enough to fill two mason jars. I layer the fruit and the yogurt like a parfait.

I may have to try that and see if I like it better than how I'm doing it.

This is what I do. I scoop out that day's portion, add a splash of almond milk and heat them in the microwave for 2 minutes (starring after one).

I tried 3-4 different "recipes" from Pinterest and hated it too. It was like cold gritty paste or thick flavorless almond milk to me.

My version of fridge oats is very different, barely any oats, and more like textured yogurt with fruit ;-) But my husband and I love it and make it a couple of times per week.

Per serving (I usually make individual ones for each of us the night before):

    1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt
1/3 cup fruit (various types, amounts, etc...but this is standard and blackberries are a favorite choice)
    1/8 cup quick oats
    1/4 TBSP ground flaxseed

Mix & eat. It's very thick.

I think tastes just really vary with this stuff.

Another favorite is the above with cinnamon and 1/2 chopped apple pre-microwaved with a little bit of water and lemon juice. Really good.

I don't like the texture of overnight oats either. I either cook oatmeal the night before and eat it cold in the morning, with a little extra liquid as it sets quite a bit extra overnight. Or I just stir it into my yogurt in the morning :-)

What I did with my overnight oats: I looked in the jar. I tried a bite. And then I nuked it for 2 minutes in the microwave >.>. Improved everything considerably, haha!

    1/2 cup rolled oats
3/4 cup almond milk or vanilla Silk (no yogurt, thank you)
1 T ground flax seeds (this acts as a thickener and adds fiber)
    1/2 scoop whey protein powder
    Dash of salt
    Dash of cinnamon
    Sweetener of choice

Refrigerate overnight. When ready to eat add a chopped apple and a tablespoon of chopped walnuts. You can also omit the cinnamon and add two tablespoons of dark cocoa powder. Some form of this has been my lunch of choice pretty much since last May. Very filling and stays with you a long time. If you make the cocoa version it tastes like dessert.

I didn't like the overnight oats I tried, either. I'll take mine cooked and warm. :)

if you like savory food in the morning--you could make savory oats with like...mushroom broth and parmesan or something.

or what about eating them for lunch or a snack? bring them to microwave at work or something.

Don't think I'll do the rest but I might add the flax to my regular oatmeal. i may even add the protein powder on days when I skip the boiled egg.

I love savory. This sounds interesting too. I was really trying to go for natural because I usually only enjoy the instant packet type of oatmeal. I was disappointed to say the least.

If you replace the almond milk with apple juice you pretty much have Bircher Muesli. When you think of overnight oats as a muesli the taste and texture is a lot easier to comprehend.

I don't understand the concept of "overnight" oats. It sounds to me like it takes just as long to put it together as it would to just make them in the am?

I eat oatmeal about once a week in the cooler months. top it with dried fruit and Lyles Golden syrup.

I love overnight oats. You can make enough for 4-5 days. Put them in pint size mason jars and in the morning nuke if you like and add your toppings. Here's my standard recipe.

1/2 cup old fashioned rolled oats
1/2 cup fat free Greek yogurt (any flavor or plain)
    3/4 cup vanilla silk
    1 teaspoon chia seeds
Sweetener (honey, maple syrup, vanilla extract)

    Toppings

    Fresh fruit
    Chopped nuts
    Granola
Cinnamon powder (can go in before also)

It's pretty much exactly what the OP did and she hated them...

OP, I like them much better without the yogurt, but for the calories, I'd just rather eat regular hot oatmeal.

I thought they were pretty gross too. I ended up dumping all the ones I made...
