Better to work out two times a day? Or one longer workout once a day?

For weight loss, it makes no difference.

IMO you are going to burn out pretty quick doing that..

how many days a week are you planning on doing two intense workouts for?

I hit the weights four times a week about an 1.5 a session plus one cardio/core/ab session a week for a total of five days a week...

You should establish some independent fitness goals and go from there...

IMO, if you're doing basically the same workout twice per day you're wasting your time...If you're getting in a good cardio workout in the AM and a solid resistance workout in the PM then I'm right there with ya...

Where weight loss is concerned...well, that's largely about your consumption, not what exercise you're doing or how often or when or whatever.
  • Well I'm thinking at least 4 days a week . I'm trying to kick start my weight loss for the year.

  • I would think that either would be good. Personally, I usually work out several times throughout the day, because it fits into my schedule that way.

You can divide them up, but then you're getting into gym clothes twice a day and having to re-apply your make-up or dry your hair... it just sounds like a hassle.
  • I agree no problems with food intake just cutting back on those extra glasses of wine that seem so damn easy to say yes too...

Wight loss doesn't need to "kick started". You are not a motorcycle. Just start. Work up to 2 workouts a day if that's your end goal, but to begin a weight loss regimen with something that extreme is more than likely dooming you to burnout and eventual failure, I'm afraid.

    this ...

eat in a calorie deficit and get on a structured lifting program...

so you are going to do 8 workouts in four days? You will probably feel great for the first two weeks and then eventually burn out..

what were these workouts going to consist of? Lifting, cardio, circuit training..???

I am going to use this quote in my everyday life all the time now...whenever someone wants to "kickstart" their weightloss with a fast or a cleanse...
    "You are not a motorcycle."

Oh, right, yeah, OP, please be more specific about your workout goals.

The best quote I've heard on exercise is, "The best workout is the one you will do."

My understanding is that you are wondering if dividing your workout into 2 shorter workouts has any benefit or if a single workout is best. Honestly, it makes no difference. Whatever gets you out there. There are those here that are warning you against burnout, since that set up would likely burn them out, but it is equally possible that it would work out well for you.

Because of my schedule there are days that I do 2 workout classes per day, and other days where I take 3 15min runs throughout the day. I have a menu of options available to me so that I can accommodate my schedule, energy level, weather, and injuries (if applicable). That way, no matter what, I can get a workout of some sort in. Try it out and see what happens, see what suits you!

I would find it harder to keep going strong for 1.5 hours straight. I would personally split it into 2 workouts, each 45 minutes long ( cardio AM ...Weights PM) I sit all day so the 8 hours between the two workouts would give me enough time to recover I guess..
This 3 days a week then a longer session on the weekend sounds good to me.... Hmmmmm I might just try this out!
  • If it suits you better, why not! I work out 2 times a day because it fits into my schedule. I cycle at home before going to work and I do 20 minutes of cardio (30DYS Shred) or swimming at night.
