I have been following the paleo diet now for 5 days. I keep having urges to eat the wrong foods. Will these urges go ever soon? Is it normal?

Never tried paleo but did atkins a while back....for me, it was difficult for the first week or so, and then the cravings for "forbidden" foods subsided.

yes and no, the more natural food you eat the less youll crave sugar BUT since paleo doesnt really allow you to eat much treats you will keep craving junk. granted there is nothing nutritionally wrong with paleo, but I dont see it as very maintainable because it is so restrictive. If you track your calories and macros you will get just as good results. Either way whatever you decide to do I know you can hit your goals and crush it! great job deciding to change your eating habits that is the first and hardest step!

You're going to break down and binge on all the stuff you've been staying away from. Seriously, eat a normal diet you can maintain for life.
  • Well this diet is my "normal" diet, I am allergic to gluten. :)

I'm allergic to wheat, oat and gluten as well (anaphylaxis). I don't follow paleo at all. So why do you have to be paleo if allergic to gluten?

    ^ This.

There are no bad or forbidden foods. There's just portion control and moderation.

If you have a medical reason (and by that, I mean a real medical reason, not a made-up one by a so-called holistic nutritionist or something you read on the internet) to cut certain foods out of your diet, then fine. But if you're just following the latest fad diet just because, then you're probably going to be miserable and just gain back whatever small amount of weight you lose on it.

Highly restrictive diets usually do this.

You don't need to follow a Paleo diet just because you are allergic to gluten… There are many other options that are less restrictive. Restrictive diets typically fail and cause binges.

I see a big issue right off the bat with why you'd crave certain foods.

    1) You've applied a morality to food by adding the word "Bad"
Food is neither good/bad right/wrong etc.

    2) You crave the foods because your body likes those foods.
Why not adopt a more moderation based nutrition plan with your top 15 foods?
Eat 80% minimally processed foods, the other 20% eat whatever you want.
    Ice cream.....
    Coke....
    Milk....

If you can lose just as much fat eating what you love, *kitten* paleo!

Fine. That's your choice. But you came on here asking for advice because you keep having the urge to eat the "wrong" foods. Our advice is to stop thinking of them as "right" or "wrong" foods and to just think of them as food. You don't have to take this advice. But you did ask...
  • Thanks for all these considerations, thanks for ur advice

Except you just said you have to eat that way because you are allergic...

Ive never tried Paleo, but Amazon has Caveman Cookies and you're allowed to have those. I've tried one flavor(i think there are 6+ flavors)and IMHO they were really gross, but you may like them. I'd say for the $5 they're worth a try.
    Good luck!

I think we all feel the caveman thing has been done to death and is not relevant to most people on this site who follow a Paleo lifestyle. Most of us just use our common sense and eat as close to nature as we can in our modern society.

I personally don't eat wheat and avoid added sugar as much as possible and so the Paleo recipes are perfect for me. I listen to my body and if a food makes me feel awful, I try and avoid it in the future. If it doesn't worry me, I eat it. Because I have an 80/20 approach, it allows me to socialise and eat out and generally enjoy life.

I love the food I eat. My daughter is extremely allergic to different foods and so she follows Paleo in a fairly strict fashion, however, my sons and my husband eat whatever they want and we all managed to co exist in the past without any problems. We all get to enjoy the food we like.

You've just made a drastic change to the way you eat, so it's normal to have a period of adjustment. I don't believe that the urges are physical so much as psychological because you are changing a habit or learned behavior by eliminating foods you associate with certain emotions or other triggers.

It reminds me of urges I had related to smoking - even after the nicotine was well out of my system, eliminating any possibility of it being a chemical cause, I would still have the urge to smoke at certain times (after meals, in the car, during stress) just because it was a behavior I had developed as either a habit or coping mechanism. It took much longer for that to go away than the withdrawal from nicotine, so I believe that a lot of what we associate with a "food craving" is just an urge to engage in the behavior rather than wanting the actual food.

Thank u for ur helpful thoughts and kind words. It's nice to hear that instead of having everything I wrote picked apart and questioned
