6 down, 184 to go

So I was given this fantastic opportunity by my employer to get healthy this year. It started with a "biometric screening". You go to your doctor and have weight and height taken along with some blood tests done. I've done it before, and learned that I was overweight (duh) and had high blood pressure (it runs in my family) and that I was at risk for a myriad of delightful diseases (meh, you have to die of something).
This year was different. This was the year that my BMI moved into Obesity Class III. That's the highest class there is. It was so high it's not even on the stupid chart in the Dr's office. Instead of getting to get dressed and head back to work my Dr. ushered me over to the lab for a barrage of extra tests. EKG, thyroid, kidney functions, liver functions.
After everything was said & done my Dr. called me back to talk about bariatric surgery or inevidable death. It was pretty much the most humiliating day of my life and it scared me into finally facing the truth about myself. I've been overweight for so long I don't even remember what it feels like to be thin. Frankly, I haven't been thin since I was about 12 years old and I'm about to turn 36. People talk about those "turning points" in their lives that made them change, alcoholics call it hitting bottom, this was me hitting bottom.
The good news is that my employer provides staff that can help their employees get to a healthy place. A few years ago they started this incentive program called "Lean You", you get cash prizes at the end of the year if you maintain a healthy BMI, blood pressure, blood sugar and log in at least 3 workouts 50 weeks per year. If you achieve all of your goals you get $400 cold hard cash. Now they've made it part of our health care benefits, in which we receive discounts on our weekly premiums.
So I have all of the tools necessary to succeed: a fitness instructor, a wellness coach, and a dietician all available for practically nothing. I started fresh in the new year and I've lost 6lbs so far. I've stuck with logging food and exercising daily. I joined a local gym with a pool because I love to swim and I even got my super supportive boyfriend to join me. I feel very blessed to have this support and I'd love to have more from people in the MFP community, too.
Please add me as your friend if you'd like an accountability buddy.
Thanks for listening,
Nicole

I just turned 34, and I have approximately 150 to lose. Could definitely use an accountability buddy.0

Ladies, I'm adding you both! I probably need to lose anywhere from 80-100 pounds to be considered a healthy weight. Like you Nicole, I have probably been overweight since I was about 11 or 12. I have always said, this year I will get into shape... as the number on the scale grew. At the end of last year, I hit a new number that I was not comfortable with and thus have been using MyFitnessPal to correct this. I haven't started an exercise regimen yet, but I recently joined a weekly social bike ride (although it has been a little too cold as of late). I'm hoping to start walking and biking once the weather warms a few degress. I live in the South, so hopefully it is around the corner.0

I recently had an apt like that at my doctor (without the tests), its was humiliating to get talked to about needing surgery to fix this. In my mind I wasn't there yet, I wasn't that big....but I am....I'm in my second week of working it down (again). Last week was rough and I only lost 0.8, but hey that is a loss! I am hoping this week will be better, made a huge change this week in the eating dept. Best of luck!0

It's nice to know there are others in the same boat! Sometimes it's nice to talk to people who know what you're going through. We can do it ShaDucky!0

Congratulations on a great start! How great to have all the support of your employer and friends! This website is great--if you look through the success stories you will see that there are a lot of people that have lost over 100 pounds and are maintaining it successfully. Just stick with it. There will be ups and downs but you will get there!0

6 pounds down-184 to go? You CAN do this! 1 pound at a time, 1 healthy choice at a time, just like how you already lost 6! I am also just shy of 6 down, and have another 50 to go! I will also do it 1 pound at a time, 1 healthy choice at a time, logging and measuring everything, moving some on most days, and being kind to myself. I don't have all of the tools you do, but the support here is great! I will send a friend request! Congrats on your progress and I wish you success on your journey!0

I like this idea, I've suggested to a group of ladies I interact with & they all love it too. I think I'm going to stop @ Michael's this week & get the supplies to do this!0
