Diet help please? :(

Hi! I was wondering if any one could help me, I wish to lose 50 pounds in 5 months (Which can be done healthy, my friend did it herself, but I can't do what she did, she weighs less than me, and yes her doctor put her on it) I am going on vacation in 5 months to either Florida or Myrtle beach and there will obviously be beach time and this is why :P I'm 258 pounds (I may be more or less, I will check my scale when I wake up tomorrow :p) my BMR is 2,003 calories per day. I just really am stuck and have no clue what to do, any help would be appreciated (: Thank ya!

    1. I live in Florida and trust me whether you go here or SC, you will not be the largest person on the beach
    2. Eat at the 2 lbs/week rate MFP gives you, buy a food scale, weigh and log everything
    3. You got this!

Haha thank you for the comforting words.
  • Keep yourself happy, first and foremost. Focus more on eating well and don't obsess too much over lbs lost, see where you are once a week maximum. Read labels, try not to eat too many packaged/frozen things because you get less bang for your buck (erm...calories). Buy veggies you like, fresh fruit, whole grain pasta and brown rice, eggs, fish, chicken and veggie broths- find seasoning you like and go easy on dressings which can be higher in calories. Eventually you learn to just whip up things that taste good and are pretty healthy without overthinking it at all. A good basic plate to me looks like 1/2 veggies, 1/4 plate of protein, and a little bit of pasta or rice. I'm definitely no expert, but that's what works for me. Best of luck!

Just a question? How often do you drink sodas or any soft drinks? It's amazing how much weight you can lose on by cutting little things out. I have clients who are overweight and tell them to throw out the sodas and they dropped 10-15 pounds in a month without much change to their diet. Since your new the best diet is the one you can stay on sustain on. Start off by cutting small things out like sodas, candy, and snacks in between meals. By the way I also live in FL :) crazy people, but great spot to live.

50 in 5 months is perfectly do-able, but will require discipline. It's time to be honest with yourself: are you disciplined enough?

If not, it might be better to shoot for 30 or so. It will be easier, allow for more wiggle room for slip ups and setbacks, you won't be as hungry, you'll eat more of the foods you love and you'll have a much better chance of success.

Either is do-able, I just think that 50 is a bit aggressive for someone who has "no clue what to do" yet.

Did you use a calculator to figure out that BMR? They are not necessarily right because they make assumptions about you that may not be correct. What I do and what I recommend to people is to eat at a calorie level that allows you to make good progress towards your goal. If you are trying to lose weight, eat so you drop 1-2 lbs/week. This assumes an average calorie burn from you getting in all of your workouts. This will be different for everyone, so you'll have to do some trial and error to figure it out. I'd start ~1800 cal/day. Hit this goal, along with your macros and getting in your workouts, for a week. If you lose 1-2 lbs, you're good to go. If you lose too much, increase your intake and repeat. If you don't lose enough, reduce your intake a bit and repeat. After a few weeks, you'll figure out what works for you in your situation.

Start a good exercise program 5-6 days/week and stay CONSISTENT. That is the key. You can make some awesome progress in 5 months, but don't beat yourself up if you don't hit the 50 lb mark by your vacation.

Also, find a good support and accountability group to get into. The one I help run on Facebook rocks and people love it.

Thank you everyone (: You've been extremely helpful (:
  • We're pretty close to in the same boat. I'm 240. I have been very successful at losing weight in the past. I've had 5 children so I 'm a pro and the on and off again. Do to some health issues I've sadly put on 80 lbs in the last 5 yrs. so I need to be more aggressive at it then most. I've lost 15 lbs in the last few months. But when I give it my all it comes off faster.
    1. Journal all the time! Every bite! Think lean healthy fats. But fat is good don't be afraid of it. Peanut butter, eggs, but moderate. A serving size. Read labels. Lower carbs low sugars. Cut out pop/ soda.
    2. Get your butt in gear. If your part of a gym, try a class the music, if not there are tons of workout DVDs but push your self if ur at home. Go for walks outside. Basically move in some way every day atleast 30 mins cardio. Also add weights 3 times a wk. start small you don't want an injury. But more muscle mass burns more cals. Also I wouldn't. Eat your workout cals it'll help the weight come off faster. But do eat the normal amount it tells you to for a healthy 2 lb a wk weight loss .
    3. Weigh your self once or twice a wk at most. Too much you'll get mad if u have a water weight gain too little and you might not know if your eating right.
    4. Good luck! You might have a bad day but don't let it carry over into the next one.
