South Beach Diet

Has anyone had both short and long term success with South Beach Diet? I got both the book and cookbook for about $2 the other day at the library.

Any comments?

It is a low calorie diet. You can be successful with it and lose weight.

Plenty of people lose weight on SB and personally, as "diets" go I think it's one of the better ones. The problem is that people lose the weight and then they go back to old habit and old ways of eating...this happens with pretty much any diet, including calorie counting...for long term success you ultimately have to change the way you live your life.

By and large, I eat very similarly to the SB maintenance...lots of whole foods basically...tons of veg...some fruit...some whole grains...plenty of lean protein and good healthy fats. I control my weight simply by adjusting my calorie intake, not the food I'm eating.

I can just as easily gain weight eating healthfully as I can lose weight eating healthfully...ultimately it comes down to consumption and the appropriate intake for your weight control goals.

i have done the south beach diet twice and I must say, it is the easiest diet to be on, especially when eating out. all restaurants have a salad that fits the south beach rules. but like cwolfan13 says... under stress or when i deviate from the diet, i go straight back to bread, which is bad.

but it's a nice diet because you lose weight quickly, which is great for motivation. i've gone down to the lowest weight i've ever been on the south beach without ever having exercised.

I have been living "South Beach" for many years with the exception of the addition of grains. I found no reason to add them. I think SB to be very easy (as long as you don't mind cooking). My diet mainly consists of vegetables and lean protein. I am never hungry nor do I have cravings for sugar like I did previously. I don't have the patience to count calories and, in my experience, there is absolutely no need to since the majority of my diet consists of vegetables.

Gonna bump this topic as I've tried to do this diet, even paid for the online service for a year, but opted out, figured I could do it on my own without paying for the website. My biggest challenge is Phase 1's "no booze for two weeks"!

Booze has sugar. The first two weeks are low in carbs and sugar.
Pick a diet that is suitable for you.

Currently in week two of Sb phase 1 and so far I'm down 10lbs. I have found myself frequently going back to the approved foods list for reminders. I have been using Pinterest to find recipes that are similar then make adjustments to remove what is not allowed and add something that is. So far I've not craved much by way of sugar/starches which is a huge plus for me. It has required some dedication of time in the kitchen but the payout seems worth it.

My mother was on it several years ago at the suggestion of her doctor to improve her health and decrease her risk of diabetes. That said, she lost over 80lbs in about a year, and has kept it off save the 10 lb fluctuations here and there. Her doctor actually hugged her and used her story as inspiration for other patients .

This is what has motivated me to try it after several diet failures. So far it's tough but I'm going to do everything in my power to stick it out... She has some really cute clothes that I'd like to fit into and borrow

I too am doing South Beach. However, I started out in phase 2. I did lots of research, and came up with 25 pages of recipes, before I started full out. It does take planning and cooking. I'm loving it :)

I love the SB cookbooks, I have three and we eat at least phase 3 most of the time. Back on phase 1 right now for post Xmas purge! It's the only diet I can do with my husband without him giving up. Plus when I had gestational diabetes it kept my sugars exactly where they needed to be.

My wife and I did it years ago and like all the others said it was easy and fast. We however couldn't stick with it for the lifestyle change. Didn't fit us well.

Yes, pretty much this. It's a well designed, healthy way to eat. My eating (in maintenance) looks a lot like SB maintenance as well. As far as "learning how to eat" goes SB is a great start. I learned quite a lot, actually, about healthy eating from the books.

For the poster freaking about giving up booze for two weeks: You decide if and why you can do that. If you can't, ouch, but there's always the option to start with phase 2.

I love South Beach Diet. I went from 210 to 135 a few years ago on South Beach. I have been sick and had lung surgery this last year which left me nearly bed bound and my eating habits went out of control so I am up 30 pounds and back to phase 1. My sugar and carb cravings are already gone. I can't wait to get back down to where I feel healthy and happy.
