Fat intake

Hi all,
I'm having a bit of an argument with people at work about fat levels, I'm not going to say which side I'm on so the answers are impartial.
How does fat intake affect weight loss and muscle gain? If you do a low fat diet does this affect fat loss and does it slow down muscle gain? Answers on a postcard..

In general, a low fat diet will only affect weight loss insofar as it is part of a caloric deficit. In other words, if you aren't eating at a caloric deficit, you won't lose weight on a low fat diet.
Dietary fat does not travel from your plate to your mouth, through your body, and then attach itself to your stomach, thighs, etc.
Is that what you mean?0 -
I have mine up to about 80%. Lost some pounds but more in inches. When replacing carbs with fat I feel better and look better after doing it for a while. Carbs increase cancer risks and fat does not. At my age that is a plus for high fat when it is used to replace carbs.
As jemhh states we do not get fat from fat per se.0 -
I more meant if you say have 30g of fat in a day will you lose fat and if you're trying to gain muscle will a low fat level like that affect muscle gain?0

It is dependent on how many calories you are eating. If you are eating enough fat+carbs+protein to equal calories in excess of what you are burning, you will gain weight, which will be a combo of fat and muscle depending on your training program (or lack thereof.) If your combination of fat+carbs+protein equals calories below what you burn, you will lose weight, which again will be a combo of fat and muscle depending on your training program.0

There is no correlation between fat consumption and fat storage. Your body stores fat when you are consuming more calories than you expend whether they're from carbs, protein or fat.....it's energy balance not source. Having said that one needs to keep in mind that 1g of carbs and 1g of protein translate into approx 4 cals whereas 1g of fat is 9 cal.
Muscle gain is premised on strength/resistance training and a caloric surplus and AFAIK is not premised on fat intake or lack thereof.

This is the part I didn't really know about--what is the minimum amount of fat needed to build muscle. I don't eat low fat so I've never looked into it.0 -

I usually see the recommendation of .35-.5g of fat per lb of bodyweight as being a general guideline.0
