Don't you think your a little obsessed??

Has anyone had a very close friend ask you this? I was dumbfounded because I don't feel like I am obsessed. Now I am feeling a littIe self conscious about it. I am wondering if I am talking about my exercise or weight loss too much. Are people offended that I am syked about going to an exercise class. The way I saw it I was grabbing a hold of my life and make good choices for a better future and be a better role model for my children. I am getting in the "game" of life instead of sitting on the sidelines watching everyone else "play". If that makes me seem obsessed then I guess I am. What do you say to someone who asks you that? I just don't know how to respond.

They are jealous b/c they don't have the same mindset as you. I have been one of those people. Now I am MFP obsessed which, I think, is a healthy obsession.0

Honey they're just feeling bad about themselves because they're not as AWESOME as you! They're over there taking years off their life with the way they're behaving while you're putting them back on! GO YOU!0

You tell them you are obsessed about your health and your well being!. It's better than being obsessed about eating or sitting on the couch all day. Some of my friends will say that to me sometimes I just brush it off and tell them that it's really important to me, and that usually ends the conversation. It's hard for people to understand unless they are doing the same thing as you are. Keep doing your thing girl!!!0

I ranted about this on my blog yesterday! It's hard for others to share your enthusiasm for good health when they are not interested in the same for themselves.
I usually just say, "No, I'm just very passionate about health and fitness - I can't help it!" - say it with a grin. They will learn that that's just the way you are.0 -
I KNOW I'm obsessed, but I don't talk with about losing weight at all - but it is pretty much all my husband and I speak about at home!! I don't care though, this is the only way that we're both going to achieve what we need to and make sure we're never going back to where we came from!0

I have recently begun to exercise also. As far as sharing this info I only share it with fellow exercisers generally (our secretary at school is a fellow jogger so we share stories in the morning) or if somewhat asks me outright. Other folks might feel jealous, depressed about not exercising themselves or might think that you are suddenly on some high horse. I never talk about my weight changes unless someone asks me directly. The only other peeps might be my family that I share this with. This reminds me that I am doing this for myself, not for the world.0

A go getter attitude often puts people who dont have the same kind of mind set in a grouchy mood.. I wouldnt worry about it and just keep doing you.. next time sumone says "aren't you a lil obsessed?" Say Why yes, yes I am. I am totally obsessed with MYSELF and MY health and MY life, and I LOVE it!! Thanks for noticing!!0

I am going through the same thing! I feel very alone sometimes. My closest friends are plus size and they seem almost annoyed I am changing. I don't mean to talk about my weight loss, goals or meals all the time. It is just a huge part of my life now. I was told the only way you can change your life is by putting 100% in. I think it does consume us because we want it so badly. I am so much healthier and so much more knowledgable now. I'm here for you girl.0

People say that to me all the time, but thats ok. Not being obsessed or aware of what was going in my mouth is what got me here in the first place. When I reach my goal weight im sure they will have something else to say.0

Your friend sounds kind of thoughtless to me. Sure, maybe you are obsessed with your program, but it's a good thing to lose weight, eat right, and get healthy. Many people are obsessed with sex, drugs, crime, etc. It might be time to find supportive people who encourage you.0

I would say "yes, I probably am. I have an obsessive personality which is why I got fat to start with. I might be obsessive but it's saving my life so if that's how it has to be then so be it. Now go back to your big mac and leave me to my lettuce"0

How could it ever be a bad/negative thing to be taking such positive steps in life. It's not obsession, it's just a great way to live.0 -
People get obsessed with a lot of things! Work, god, their families. Since when is obsession looked down on?

being fit and healthy is the new you! you ARE taking control of your life and taking exercises classes or going on a walk - are now ways that you can have fun! it's part of your identity now! i'd just say something like... "i'm having a lot of fun taking this new class..." or "i'm finally getting a handle on my life and becoming healthier"..... on the other hand, some can get too obsessed. and thats when their "healthy" lifestyles start to disrupt other areas of their lives. I have been down that path before.. not a good one. If you don't think you are too obsessed and it's not damaging your life - then you are just fine !!

:laugh: Keep up the good work. Keep on "Gym-ing" keep on healthy dieting. yes! take control of your life and be healthier. when you're striving for a goal weight you have to be incontrol. You have to keep a constant eye on your diet. because if you don't,, you let your diet slip.......you can't be bothered to go to the gym today.....trust me, those lbs will creep on before you know it.

I can see where talking about yourself (any subject) all the time may not be what your friend wants to talk about.
I think you should talk to her about how her comment made you feel and then maybe you will get clarification.
We can all give you advice, but truly, if she is a good friend, she could have been having an off day OR maybe she had something to talk about...
I started to overwhelm people when I went all frugal/we must save money and get out of debt. Yes, I was/am obsessed with it. But it's a good thing. Someone said "all you talk about are finances" and I realized they were right and I had to mix it up a bit.
Sorry she hurt your feelings.

I am lucky in that all my family and friends of my MFP-obsession (yes, it is an obsession and I don't care, it makes me feel and look GREAT!) although I have also come across this problem with colleagues.
They were always telling me "Oh god, you're obsessed...let yourself go...aw, you were so much more fun when you gorged yourself at restaurants/drank a zillion shots on a night out..." etc. However, when we went on a team building day and had to do lots of physical activity - I was the only one from the whole company who could stand the pace, everyone else wimped out/made excuses... Hah! Who's laughing now! :laugh:
Like others have said - the sort of people who make these statements are only jealous - they don't have the drive, commitment or stamina to make the lifestyle changes you have - so don't let anyone make you think of your new routine in a negative light! You're amazing and you should remember that no matter what anyone says!0 -
Hey there
there is a different between a sick obsession and a healthy obsession. I know this because I'm bulimic (and recovering again!) That's a sick obsession. The difference is that you can function otherwise in your life - your life doesn't revolve around or crash because you missed a workout or eat something unplanned. Just think of it this way - a healthy obsession is the only way to develop a habit. And a healthy habit lifestyle is ultimately what we should ALL strive for. Good luck and keep up the good work!

I would say "I'm sorry, I'm just really excited about the new things that I am doing and wanted someone to share it with." Sometimes this feedback can be a good way to check yourself. Are you constantly taking about food, calories, exercising, etc? Even though it might feel like you are just excited and sharing, the person on the other end might want to talk about something else once in awhile. I'm not to say that you are obsessed, I'm just saying that it might be a good time to converse about what's going on in the other person's life.
So, take the feedback you heard from your friend, evaluate if you think it is true or not, and either choose to change or not but don't get hung up on it - it's not worth fretting about!0 -
Yes, many people have questioned my motives for eating healthy and loving life.....sounds silly doesn't it? I've come to the conclusion that many people are "obsessed" with some things... if we want to call it that. The people that are questioning you, I bet, are obsessed with something as well. Could be the computer, themselves, their job, friends and famiyl (which is a good one), shopping, snacking...gosh, the lists go on-and-on.
They just don't show the same interests as you. Believe me, one day, they will. Their obsession of eating the wrong things ,or in major quantities, or sitting and watching their movies in excess, and lack of excercise will bring them to their "obsession" of eating healthy and excercising as you and I have chosen.
Life has it's ways of showing us what we need to be "obsessed" in. Sad, that for some of us, many serious diseases (which can be avoided) are what's going to open our eyes.
I guess it's called a, "wake-up-call".
So, if your obsessed with healthy nutrition, and excercise....join the many people who have the same interests as you.

It's funny that you should post this. Just a while ago I posted the same topic except it was my husband. He was frustrated with me because he thought that I was "obsessed" with my calories and workouts. Since then he has decided to give it a try and he is just as "obsessed" with it as I am. Of course I have to point it out to him every time he says, "do you know have many calories are in......"0

Yes, my husband (jokingly) think i'm a little obsessed...of course, here I am almost 40 lbs down, so I just let it roll off my back0

I have taken this mentality too. I talk about running with other runners, weightloss/diet with only 1-2 people but my food choices are for myself and I only blog/talk about it here. I read an article about a woman that lost a huge amount of weight and she followed what her doctor told her - eat small meals, exercise daily and tell no one what your are doing. I no longer feel disappointed when I don't reach a goal in a certain timeframe because I don't feel that I have to answer to others.0 -
